(West Salem, WI – May 1, 2010) Fans watched in amazement as Shawn Pfaff blew past Paul Proksch to win the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature on a windy Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.
Pfaff took over the lead under caution when race leader Paul Proksch went high to restart two wide. Proksch tried to take the lead back, but knew Pfaff had the better car. “He would have got me, he was faster,” Proksch said.
In a post-race interview Pfaff said, “If Paul (Proksch) went low, I was going high.” That wasn’t necessary. Pfaff took the inside line and shot past Proksch.
Proksch, a former two-time track champion, started on the pole but lost the lead when a caution came out involving Troy Rave. That’s when Pfaff took over the lead. Pfaff held on through two more cautions. One when Jerimy Wagner spun in turn two and two other cars were collected; and another when Jes Tenner and Rave colliding while trying to avoid a loose Mike Carlson. With five to go Pfaff had pulled away into a 10-car-length lead.
Meanwhile, Bill Niles was trying to stay in the third with Steve Carlson coming up quick behind him. Niles held onto the position for his best Late Model finish ever at La Crosse Speedway. Carlson finished in fourth. Ty Reedy was fifth.
Jerrod Loging held onto the race lead in the North Country Contractors Sportsmen division race. A late caution brought Matt Inglett to Loging’s rear bumper. Steve Owen and Brian Hesselberg got together and skidded through turn one and then into the infield bring out the third and final caution of the race. They restarted the race with only one lap to go. Inglett pushed his car to try to get around Loging, but Loging was able to keep Inglett behind him. Rick Schermerhorn took third followed by Ken Lewis and Greg Scheck.
Jason Bolster surged to the front around Brad Warthan to win the Unite Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. After 15 laps of bumping and banging, and a caution involving Justin Bagstad, Bolster and Warthan were side by side coming around to the checkered flag. Bolster quickly moved into the lead to cross the finish line ahead of Warthan. Josh Inglett, Adam Moore and Charles Vian Jr. round out the top five.
The Window World Hornets were out for the first time this season racing in two different features. Kim Strom won the first feature after Justin Abbott spun on the backstretch and flew into the water in the middle of the infield. Ron Amann took the second feature holding off Chris Swenson.
