Herbst Wins with Backup Engine

(West Salem, WI – September 4, 2010) After blowing two engines last week, J. Herbst returned to the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway Saturday, with a third-string engine, and used it to win the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature.

The green flag waved to start the race and as the leaders were about to complete the first lap four cars got together in the backstretch. The wreck ended in a pile of twisted metal. Kevin Nuttleman, Tony Bagstad, Chris Skrede and Tim Nelson were the drivers involved.

The race started for a second time and Herbst was in fourth. He quickly moved into third as race leader Mike Carlson started to lose momentum. Carlson fell back and Mike Koeneke took over the lead. Herbst moved to second.

On lap eleven, Bill Niles spun out on the front stretch bringing out a caution. When the lane cone came out Koeneke took the inside and Herbst moved to the outside lane.

Within two laps Herbst had taken over the lead by passing Koeneke on the outside.

Steve Carlson was coming up quick behind Herbst. Carlson moved into second with twelve laps to go, but never had a chance to catch Herbst, who had gained a five car length lead.

Carlson finished second followed by Koeneke, Brad Powell and Brent Kirchner.
Herbst is leading the points standings with Shawn Pfaff two points behind in second. Brent Kirchner following close in third. The track champion will be decided during Oktoberfest Race Weekend.

Rick Schermerhorn won the North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature. Schermerhorn started mid-pack and with six laps to go a caution came out two cars spun in turn one. Schermerhorn restarted fourth and quickly jumped to the second position. He stayed there until the last lap when Schermerhorn made contact with Greg Scheck. The two slid through turn four together and Schermerhorn was able to recover quicker to win the race. Dan Gilster took advantage and finished second, Scheck finished third.

Andy Moore held off Henry Vian to win the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. Vian tried for eight laps to get around Moore before falling back to third where he finished. Nathan White finished second. Moore also won the Double Spin to Win Novelty event.
