Powell Claims His First Feature Win of the Season

By: Ashley Iwanski
Not a single driver was fast enough to catch Brad Powell who dominated the field Saturday at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway to win the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature.

The only caution of the feature was on lap three when Emily Sue Steck got loose and spun out. Unfortunately J. Herbst, who was involved in a wreck last week, was collected in the crash and was unable to restart the race. On the restart Powell was quick to speed around Shawn Pfaff to move into 2nd. Within a lap Powell was on the bumper of leader Matthew Henderson. It didn’t take long for both Powell and Pfaff to get around Henderson (4th) to claim the 1st and 2nd positions.

At the half way point Todd Korish began to quickly advance through the field, taking one position at a time and finishing in the 3rd position. Kevin Nuttleman started 7th then fell back into the field. He was able to race his way back to the front to finish 5th. Steve Carlson was uncharacteristically absent from the Late Models feature race after motor problems during qualify.

The North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature was riddled with cautions. During the warm-up laps two cars got together in turn four delaying the green flag. Then, only two laps into the race, Mike Albrecht Jr. was spinning in the backstretch as Tony Leis and Dan Gilster were wrecking in turn four. Just when it looked like the race was going to go green to the end, Brandon Berg hit the wall in turn three with six to go. When the green flag waved Ken Lewis and Steve Bachman got together in turn one. Bachman was able to drive to the pits, but Lewis ended up on his roof in the middle of turns one and two. The race was red flagged and restarted after the Thunderstox feature. The last five laps went caution free as Rick Schermerhorn and Greg Scheck finished side by side. Schermerhorn walked away with the win, Scheck took 2nd.

Henry Vian crossed the finish line first in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. Throughout the race cars were spinning as other cars were trying to dodge them and avoid wrecking. Fortunately only one caution flag waved due to cars stalled on the track. On the last lap Vian was able to avoid Chris Swenson’s attempts to pass him. Vian was later disqualified and Swenson took the win. Josh Inglett finished 2nd, Adam Moore 3rd and Jake Krueger 4th.

The Skidders were also in attendance to do a little racing of their own. The cars, which have metal plates welded onto the back tire rims, were dancing around the track. Kyle Swenson was able to hold on to the lead, despite spinning out many times, to take the checkered flag.

On May 23rd regular racing will return with an exciting T-Bone crash novelty event you won’t want to miss. Saturday, May 30th the NASCAR Late Model, Sportsmen, and Thunderstox divisions will accompany La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway’s first ever Boat Races. The Boat Races consists of cars pulling boats around the track trailer-free to see who can cross the finish line first.
