Herbst Holds Onto Points Lead with Feature Wins

By: Ashley Iwanski
(West Salem, WI – August 21, 2010) Points leader J. Herbst held onto his patience to get a feature win in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Herbst was running in third behind Mike Koeneke and Jay Sauter. The two leaders were in a fierce battle for the lead while Herbst held back; waiting to see what would happen between the two.

A caution came out with six laps to go when Chris Skrede spun in the middle of turns three and four. When the lane cone came out Koeneke took the inside lane with Sauter on the outside in row one. As the leaders exited turn four to take the green flag Koeneke got loose collecting Sauter. They were inches from slamming into the wall before the got their cars back under control.

While under caution, the two make contact again. Koeneke was sent to the rear of the field and Sauter took his car into the pits with front end damage.
The lane cone came out once again and Herbst moved into the lead choosing the inside lane with Shawn Pfaff, who’s second in points, on the outside of row one.

As the race restarted for a final time Herbst pulled into the lead. Pfaff made attempts to take the race lead from Herbst, but came up short.

After the race Herbst commented on the action he tried hard to avoid.
“I didn’t know what was going on with those two (Koeneke and Sauter),” Herbst said. “I just wanted to get away from it.”
And he did.

When it comes to being the points lead, Herbst says he isn’t worried about them.

Pfaff finished second followed by Troy Rave, Todd Korish and Brad Powell.
Jamie Dummer won his first career North Country Contractors Sportsmen feature. He held off Matt Inglett and Jimmy Gilster to get the win in the caution free race.

Kris Heinz won the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. Heinz managed to work his way around spinning cars in every turn to take his first win of the season.

The Window World Hornets were also in attendance Saturday at La Crosse Speedway. John Towner took the win in the first feature and Chris Swenson won feature two.
