June 23, 2001; West Salem, WI - During the fan photo session before Saturday night's races at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, reigning track champion Kevin Nuttleman was asked what needed to be done to catch points leader Mark Lamoreaux's quick car. "If we knew, we'd be as quick as him," Nuttleman said. "We're not there yet, but I think the 23 car is." His words were prophetic.
The 23 car is Brad Powell, and he put pressure on the points leader by taking his first feature win of the season, passing leader Brent Kirchner on lap 11, and holding on for the win. He was aided by a lap four yellow in turn one, that put Lamoreaux, and top cars like Mike Belling and Steve Burgess to the rear of the field. Kirchner maintained second the rest of the way, while Steve Carlson took third, followed by Steve Holzhausen, Todd Korish and J. Herbst. Tom McClintock, Kevin Nuttleman, Tim Hagen and Kurt Thicke rounded out the top ten, while Lamoreaux came back to post an 11th place finish. Qualifying heats went to Steve Carlson and Todd Oliver, while the Bud Dash wins went to J. Herbst and Andy Burgess. No qualifying was held because of Fan Photo Night, and Tom McClintock advanced to the feature by winning the semi. Tom Thill, Corey Jankowski and Jeff Baker pulled away from the field in the Sportsman feature, but as they battled for position, the field caught up to them by lap 11. Baker finally moved around Thill for the lead on lap 12, but a seven car accident in turn three brought out the yellow. Baker held off Jon Barrette over the final three lap sprint to the finish, with Thill third, Jimmy Gilster fourth and Rick Steinhoff fifth. Qualifying heats went to Dan Linnehan and Jason Bolster, while Sam Andersen and Jimmy Gilster won the Bud Dashes. Dave Steensen advanced to the feature by winning the semi. John Hendrickson took the early lead in the Thunderstox feature, but by lap 13, he had a trio of cars on his back bumper. On lap 14, Troy Anderson worked by on the outside to take the lead and the win, and Jake Arneson also got by for second on the final lap. Jes Tenner took third, followed by Hendrickson and John Olson. Heat winners were John Edwards, Bill Inglett, Greg Lindvig and John Hendrickson.
