Nuttleman's Patience Brings
Victory! |
July 14,
2001; West Salem, WI -
Saturday night was a great night to be at the La Crosse Fairgrounds
Speedway. The fans were treated to a super 50-lap Midwest Fuels Late Model race. Ronnie
Hawley, Jr. looked as if he were going to run away with the True Value 50 as he stretched
his lead to 10 car lengths. That is until lap 17 when a five-car pile up brought out the
yellow and Hawley seen his lead disappear. On the restart, Tony Bagstad was all over
Hawley's Monte Carlo.
Two short laps later, Bagstad found room on the inside of Hawley in turn
three and took the lead. He would lead the next nineteen laps until he pulled into the
pits and would stay there for the night. That left J. Herbst the leader, but only for a
lap. Kevin Nuttleman took the lead one lap later and remained there until the end.
This was Nuttleman's second win of the season. He thanked his crew and
fans as he did a post race interview on the front stretch. The rest of the top five are as
follows: J. Herbst, Ronnie Hawley, Jr., Brent Kirchner and Mark Lamoreaux. Late Model
points leader Brad Powell finished seventh.
The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature went green from
start to finish. The race left many cars with paint remnants from their competitors, but
each driver held on and proved their driving skills. There were many opportunities for
three-wide racing, but common sense prevailed. Corey Jankowski of Tomah, WI worked his way
through the field to take the checkered flag. The top five were as follows: Jeff Baker,
Jon Barrette, Tom Thill and Jimmy Gilster. Chand Wehling, who was quick qualifer on the
night, was disqualified after a post-race inspection.
In the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, Mary Schill started from
the pole, and never looked back. That would be her second win of the evening. Scott Voss
gave chase, but ended up finishing second, Matt Inglett third, with Chad Rosendahl coming
in fourth and Les Stanfield rounding out the top five.
