Burgess breaks into win
column at LaCrosse! |
July 21,
2001; West Salem, WI - Andy
Burgess of Rice Lake, many times the fast qualifier of the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late
Models, wove his way through the field to win his first feature at the La Crosse
Fairgrounds Speedway. Burgess took the lead of the race from points leader Brad Powell
with six to go by diving to the inside going into turn three. From there he was able to
pull away from the field and finish his race night in victory lane. His crew ran from the
pits to join him in victory lane.
Earlier on lap four, seven cars tangled in turn three, leaving the field
with several laps of caution to think about their strategy for the restart. Three of the
cars involved had time to duck into the pits, make the minor repairs, shed some sheet
metal and rejoin the field On the restart, Marv DeGarmo's Pontiac Grand Prix had a tire go
down, leaving the field to bunch up behind him. The next restart had Tony Bagstad as the
leader with Tim Hagen, Denis Haugrud and points leader Brad Powell close behind. Powell
cautiously made his way to second and finally got around Tony Bagstad with sixteen to go.
A few laps later, Andy Burgess made his way to the front and never looked back.
The Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model semi-feature went the twelve laps
clean and green. Tim Nelson of La Crescent was able to keep his Pontiac Grand Prix up
front and took the win. Ken Christenson, Jr. took second and Kraig Burrows rounded out the
top three. The winners from the remaining heats were Jim Hagel, Steve Holzhausen, Rick
Wateski and Brent Kirchner.
The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature pole sitter Sam
Andersen in a hot battle for the lead with Jimmy Gilster. Gilster was able to get around
Andersen with nine to go. From there he watched as Chand Wehling and Jeff Baker worked on
each other for second. This was Gilsters second win of the season. He celebrated in true
NASCAR fashion by carrying a Dale Earnhardt flag while completed a polish victory lap.
Baker and Wehling swapped that second place for several laps. Jeff Baker was able to
finish the race second with Corey Jankowski coming in third. The winners in the Ray Hutson
Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman Heats were Branden Berg, Tom Thill, Paul Smith, Randy
Steinhoff and Chand Wehling.
The United Auto Supply feature was led to the green flag by Lorne
Klonecki, but Shane Ulvestad took the lead and would lead through the double checkered
flags. However, after post race inspection, both Klonecki and Ulvestad were disqualified
leaving Chad Rosendahl the winner. Jes Tenner ended up second followed by Al Bartels, Dan
Secor and Les Stanfield.
The night was finished by Ben Allen driving through a motor home on the
front stretch. He not only went through it once, but he went around for a second time. He
climbed from the car and waved to the crowd from the roof of his car.
