Korish Claims First Victory!

August 4, 2001;  West Salem, WI -  The full moon that plagued many of the races Saturday night in La Crosse, didn't seem to bother Todd Korish as he claimed his first Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model feature. Superstition didn't bother Korish the entire night. He also qualified thirteenth, a spot many would have thought would have brought a dark cloud to his night. The field of twenty five did have a rough start when several cars broke loose in turn one of the first lap and ended up sitting in turn two. With the complete restart, Korish took the lead and led every lap there after.

Isaak Owen of La Crosse followed behind Korish, dueling it out with points leader Brad Powell. With five laps to go, Powell decided it was time to go, but Owen had other thoughts. He was able to hold off Powell and bring home a second place finish. Powell ended up third with fast qualifier Andy Burgess fourth and Mark Lamoreaux finishing fifth.

The Ray Hutson Grand National Sportsman started the night in a fashion that we haven't seen at La Crosse in quite awhile. During the first of several heats, Dave Steensen got squirrley out of four. John Towner tried to avoid him but was unsuccessful as he barrel rolled down the front stretch several time. Although Towners rear axle landed somewhere near victory lane, the rest of the car stopped close to turn four. Towner was able to climb from the car and walked back to the pits.

The Ray Hutson Grand National Sportsman feature found several drivers finding it hard to keep from sliding through the turns. They were able to hold on and make it to the end under green. Rick Steinhoff, driving his 1993 Dodge Ram, started on the outside of row one and ended his night with his first victory of the season. Following Steinhoff was Jeff Baker, Aaron Hass, Jon Barrette and Tom Thill.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstocks also had their share of bad luck. They too seemed to be effected by the moon. Some ended their race in the infield 'swamp', while others limped back to their pits. The checkered flag went to Chris Skrede of Holmen. This was his second win of the season. Dan Secor, Troy Anderson, Jes Tenner and Ron Heller rounded out the top five.

The night of the full moon was ended with the famous Trailer Race of Destruction. Although many race cars were wrecked during races earlier in the night, the debris they left was nothing compared to the destruction the 5,000 plus fans seen during the Trailer Race of Destruction. There were trailers, boats, lawn mowers and a whole lot of mangled metal that littered the quarter mile track. The fans voted and crowned Jake Arneson of Galesville the Master of Destruction.
