Bagstad Battles for First Victory of Season!

August 11, 2001; West Salem, WI - Tony Bagstad, starting from the pole, took home his first Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model feature win this year. He didn't have an easy time of it however. With four cautions and restarts, Bagstad had to do battle with the likes of Rick Wateski and Mark Lamoreaux. Lamoreaux made his way around Wateski with 10 to go and set his sights on Bagstad. He was trying everything he could, including driving on the grass, but was unable to make it by Bagstad. Bagstad was then able to stretch his lead and end the night celebrating in victory lane.

One of the most surprising events of the night happened during the NASCAR Late Model qualifying. Blake Horstman, a rookie to the Late Model division, snatched the top spot qualifying with a time of 20.184. It was Horstmans first night as a Late Model competitor. He recently made the move up from the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman division. Horstman finished the feature in eleventh position. Andy Burgess ended up qualifying second, followed by Mike Belling, Mark Lamoreaux and Brad Powell.

The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman brought the crowd to the edge of the seat many times throughout the race by racing three-wide down the back stretch and through the corners. Even though the drivers showed some aggressive driving, the yellow only flew twice. The first came of with seven to go when Lucas Korish lost a wheel in turn two. That was quickly cleaned up and they were set to restart. Jeff Baker of Holmen took the lead and fought off Jon Barrette and Corey Jankowski. The second yellow came out when Chand Wehling, Tom Thill and Kevin Eddy came together in turn three and ended up in turn four. Wehling was the only one of the three to end his night in the pits. Baker was able to hold off the hard charging Jon Barrette and Corey Jankowski to claim his second feature of the season.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstocks provided even more excitement. Jason Stark was able to make his way through the field and take the lead with a few laps ago. Stark would extend his lead and end up in victory lane. The rest of the top five were: Ed Senn, Rob Curran, Les Stanfield, and John Olson.

The night ended with the Features Sports Bar Hornets features. Although they had a hard time getting started, they were able to provide the fans with more great race action. Rick Schermerhorn and Chris Hartley were able to claim victories in each of their feature races.
