On opening night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway last week, Mark Lamoreaux simply ran out of time as he tried to chase down Steve Carlson. In week two, Lamoreaux chased down Carlson by lap 11, then got by Steve Holzhausen on the final restart of the race as he claimed his first win of the season in the Cub Foods 25.

Holzhausen started on the pole, and paced the field, before a lap three yellow flew as Tim Schendel broke loose coming out of turn two, and triggered a seven-car incident. Bill Niles and Brent Kirchner got the worst of that, as their cars headed to the pits on wreckers.

Carlson and Lamoreaux started their runs to the front on the restart, with Carlson getting by Mike Belling, Tony Bagstad and Kurt Thicke on three  consecutive laps. Lamoreaux started two spots behind Carlson on the restart, but by lap seven, he was one spot behind the 66 car.

Lamoreaux took two laps to close a four-car deficit on Carlson, and on lap 11, Lamoreaux moved by him on the outside as the cars came out of turn two. The final yellow of the race flew two laps later, as Ken Christenson, Jr. spun coming out of turn four, and Greg Scheck spun his car trying to avoid Christenson, and the two cars bumped on the frontstretch.

Lamoreaux held back on the restart, and Holzhausen appeared to move up the track to try to block a slingshot move by as the cars took the green. Lamoreaux ducked to the inside of Holzhausen as the cars dove into turn one, and came out of the second turn with the lead, as he took the win.

Carlson moved by Holzhausen a lap later, and finished second, while Belling, Bagstad and Holzhausen. Rick Wateski finished sixth, followed by Kevin Nuttleman, Brad Powell, Thicke and J. Herbst.

Tim Schendel jumped out to a big lead in the semi as he took the win, and  Bill Niles and Greg Scheck quickly claimed the second and third spots to  advance, leaving a battle for the final spot between Greg Croell and Marv  DeGarmo. DeGarmo tried several times to get by, including ducking low on the final lap, but he came up a half-length short at the finish as Croell
advanced to the feature.

Brad Powell set fast time at 97.471 MPH, while qualifying heats went to Jeff Krueger and Tom McClintock and the Bud Dashes were won by Steve Holzhausen and Mark Lamoreaux.

Chand Wehling moved around early leader Tom Thill on lap five, and threatened to run away with the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman division  feature event. Rick Shisler, Jeff Baker and Corey Jankowski all made it by Thill by lap ten, as they closed in on the lead car. The race went green all the way, and that allowed Wehling to hold off the charge, as Shisler, Bart Horstman, Baker and Jankowski rounded out the top five.

Fast timer for the Sportsman division was Tony Ciano, who clocked a 86.535 MPH lap around the 5/8-mile oval.  Mike Albrecht, Jr. and Chad Goldbeck won qualifying heats, while Bud Dash wins went to Sam Andersen and Jeff Baker.

Jeff Schaitel led most of the way in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but Jes Tenner dogged him over the last seven laps, but was unable to get by for the lead, as Schaitel used a lapped car to block him, and pulled away for the win.

Thunderstox heat winners included Jason Lindvig, Jes Tenner, Jason Stark and Dean Ashbacher, with Ashbacher taking his win when leader John Edwards lost a tire on the final lap. Kris Budhaupt came away the winner in the Bud Dash, while Dan Secor paced the field in the semi-feature. Edwards came back to finish second in the semi, and advanced to the feature.
