Belling battles for second feature win!

August 25, 2001;  West Salem, WI -  After a stormy morning, the thunder in West Salem, Wisconsin was not from the sky, but from the great race action Saturday night. Steve Holzhausen started on the pole for the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model feature and pulled away from the field, or so he thought. Little did he know, Mike Belling was picking off cars methodically behind him. Belling was able to work his way around two cars by lap three and by lap 5 he had set his sights on Holzhausen's Ford Taurus. Belling was able to make his way around Holzhausen on lap 8 and was able to lead the remaining laps. Kevin Nuttleman battled Belling with one lap to go, but he ended the night in second. This was Belling's second win of the season.

Mark Lamoreaux's night looked to be in question, when the engine on his Ford Taurus let go during his heat race. Fellow competitor Kraig Burrows showed great sportsmanship by allowing Lamoreaux to race his car in the feature. Lamoreaux ended up finishing twelfth.

The Ray Hutson Grand National Sportsman looked as if they may go from the green flag to the checkered yellow free like the Late Models. Chad Goldbeck got loose in three with 9 laps to go. Although many cars swerved to miss him, Morris Proctor was not that lucky. He ended up tagging Goldbeck and they both went to the pits by way of a wrecker.

On the restart, Tom Thill found himself on the front row outside. The second yellow flew when Trent Boettcher and Rick Steinhoff came together and spun out. Thill again found himself in the lead on the restart and led the remaining three laps to find his way to victory lane. This was also Thill's second feature win of the season.

Earlier in the afternoon, two sportsman drivers found themselves with great cars, but failed engines. Jimmy Gilster, who was fourth in the points coming into tonight, blew his engine during practice. He and his crewed hurried to their shop nearby and were able to replace the engine, return to the track and finish, thirteenth in the feature.

Tony Ciano, seventh in the points coming into tonight, blew his engine during qualifying. In another show of sportsmanship, Todd Lockington borrowed his car to Ciano for the remainder of the night. Ciano finished the feature intwenty-third.

The United Auto Supply Thunderstocks did their best to avoid the infield pond,  known to the fans as "Lake Speed". Joey Johnson, however, found the pond with his Pontiac Grand Prix. He would remain at the edge of "Lake Speed" and watch his competitors finish the race.

The yellow flag was thrown when yet another driver found the beach area of "Lake Speed".  Jason Stark did his best to avoid this car, but ended up spinning. He would finish that lap in reverse and spin around on the front stretch to get going the right way. The checkered flag flew as Joe Rinartz crossed the finish line.  After post-race inspection, the win was awarded to Kelly Schendel.

The evening was brought to an end with the two Features Sports Bar & Grill Hornet features. The first feature win went to Clint Mohn.  Gary Towner was able to cross the finish line first and ended up in victory lane.
