September 1, 2001; West Salem, WI - The weather was great for racing and the crowd was not disappointed as the late models put on a super 100-lap feature at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway Saturday night.
Andy Burgess showed patience and great skill as he worked his way through the field of 28 late models to win his second feature of the season. Burgess, who started seventh, made it around Mark Lamoreaux on lap 56, then stretched his lead to as much as seven car-lengths until he caught the back of the field. Points leader Brad Powell closed in but could not make it by Burgess. Kevin Nuttleman battled past Powell and reeled Burgess in, but Burgess held off Nuttleman and took the win. Powell, Steve Holzhausen and Lamoreaux rounded out the top five finishers. Burgess said during a post-race interview that he was "ready to go a hundred more." The Grand National Sportsman feature went green to checkered yellow-free, as Jeff Baker, Chand Wehling and Corey Jankowski battled the entire race behind race winner Kevin Eddy, who led all 15 laps. Baker, Jankowski, Wehling and Jimmy Gilster rounded out the top five. Dan Secor brought home his third Thunderstox feature win of the season. He also won the dash. Rookie Troy Anderson came in second followed by Bill Inglett. Next week the points champions will be crowned. |
