Lamoreaux scores again at LaCrosse!
By David Morgan

May 12, 2001;  West Salem, WI -  Mike Belling controlled the Rose Jewelers 25 at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway early, Brad Powell made a charge to the front, and Steve Carlson made a daring move under both of those drivers to take the lead. It was all for naught, however, as Mark Lamoreaux maneuvered his way through the field, and passed Carlson just before the second yellow of the race, to take his second feature win of the season.

Belling jumped to the lead at the start, with Carlson and Powell also moving by pole-sitter Tim Nelson early. Powell went outside of Carlson on lap three, moving up to second, and began closing in on Belling by lap eight when J. Herbst slid through turns three and four, triggering an eight-car accident the brought out the first caution.

Powell went to the outside of Belling on the restart, and was alongside the lead car on lap nine, when Belling slid up the
track, pushing Powell up to the wall. Carlson saw his opportunity, and ducked under both cars coming out of turn two,
and took the lead.

Lamoreaux was in sixth by the caution, and got by Tim Nelson on lap eight. As Tony Bagstad braked to avoid the Belling-Powell bump, Lamoreaux followed Carlson by and took over second.

Carlson led for five laps, but Lamoreaux went by on the outside at the start-finish line, just before the yellow flew for an
incident involving Isaak Owen, Kurt Thicke and Bill Niles in turn four. All Carlson and the rest of the field saw of
Lamoreaux the rest of the way was his yellow bumper, as he took his second feature win of the season.

Carlson finished second, while Powell recovered for third. Steve Holzhausen and fast timer Andy Burgess rounded out the top five, while Belling, Bagstad, Kevin Nuttleman, Rick Wateski and Nelson took spots six through ten respectively.

Other winners in the Late Model division included Brent Kirchner in the semi, Jeff Krueger and Kraig Burrows in the qualifying heats, and Rick Wateski and J. Herbst in the Bud Dashes. Fast timer was Andy Burgess, at 97.158 MPH.

Blake Horstman broke to the lead early in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sports feature, and Rick Shisler was
content to follow around behind him for most of the way, but in the final five laps Shisler started to push the issue, but
Horstman was able to hold him at bay as he took the win. Shisler took second, followed by Chand Wehling, Corey Jankowski and Jeff Baker.

Prelims for the Sportsman drivers were won by Branden Berg in the semi, John Towner and Don Henderson in the qualifiers, and Randy Steinhoff and Chad Goldbeck in the Bud Dashes. Corey Jankowski was quick timer at 86.481 MPH.

Ed Senn and John Edwards moved to the front of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but on lap five, Mary Schill and John Olson got tangled up and ended up in the turn three wall, bringing out the first yellow. One lap after the restart,
Edwards went back to the outside, and moved by Senn for the lead, but Jes Tenner was moving up quickly. On lap 12, as
Edwards went to the outside of Mary Schill, Tenner ducked to the inside, and the two cars split the 91 car, giving Tenner the inside line, and he used that line to hold on for he win. Edwards took second, followed by Bill Inglett, Matt Stark and
Senn.

Heat winners for the Thunderstox went to Bill Inglett, Jason Stark, John Edwards and Dan Secor. Mary Schill was the victor in the dash, while Al Bartels won the semi.

Barb Bjorkman provided most of the excitement in the Queen Bees race, and finally worked her way into the lead on the final lap, but was unable to navigate turn two, hitting the wall. Tammy Eirschele retook the lead, and came away with the first Queen Bee win of the season.

Next week, the Features Sports Bar Hornets are back to add a buzz to the racing action, along with the NASCAR Late Models, Sportsman and Thunderstox drivers. Qualifying begins at 5:30, with the first race at 7:05 for the Hornets heat races.
