May 19, 2001; West Salem, WI - Steve Holzhausen found himself with a couple of young guns in his rear view mirror on Saturday night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in the Pischke Motors 25. One was Brent Kirchner, a former Sportsman division champ who has become a top ten late model driver. The other was Holzhausen's teammate, second-year driver J. Herbst. Holzhausen managed to keep both of them in his rear view mirror for 25 laps, as he came home with the feature win for the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Models. The win came on a night when a regular-season record 183 cars competed in four divisions, breaking the previous record by 16 cars. The only nights in speedway history that have had more cars competing have been the Oktoberfest Race Weekend openers the last two years.
Holzhausen's only bobble came on lap six, when he slid up in turn four,
but Nuttleman had his chance, but couldn't stay with the lead group on the restart, and Kirchner and Herbst never seriously challenged Holzhausen the rest of the way. Herbst set up inside of Kirchner twice, but was never able to pull alongside, as he settled for third, his best finish as a late model driver. Nuttleman was fourth, followed by Powell, Lamoreaux, Belling, Todd Korish, Andy Burgess and Tony Bagstad. Frank Doherty came back from a spin in his heat race to take the semi and advance to the feature. Heat winners included Marv DeGarmo and Kraig Burrows, while the Bud Dash wins went to Rick Wateski and Kurt Thicke. Andy Burgess was quick timer for the second straight week, this time at 20.150 seconds, for an average speed of 97.370 MPH. Sam Andersen really didn't want to see yellow in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature on Saturday night. After battling Morris Proctor early, Andersen took control of the race, before a yellow flew on lap 13 when Jeff Baker lost a wheel in turn four. On the restart, Trent Boettcher briefly took the lead, but slid high in turn four, and while trying to collect his car, he tagged Andersen, triggering a 13-car accident on the frontstretch. Jon Barrette benefitted, as he was the first car through, and held off Corey Jankowski and Jimmy Gilster for the win. Gilster took second, followed by Jankowski, Blake Horstman and Tony Ciano. Horstman was fast timer for the Sportsman drivers, clocking an 86.181 MPH lap. Branden Berg took his first-ever Sportsman checkered in one heat, while John Towner won the second qualifier. Chand Wehling and Randy Steinhoff took the Bud Dashes. John Olson started on the pole of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, and led all 15 laps to claim the feature win. Rookie Ron Heller finished a strong second, but could never challenge Olson, and Mark Challet, Jason Stark and Rob Curran rounded out the top five. Dean Ashbacher won the semi for the Thunderstox, while Jeff Edwards took the checkers in the Bud Dash. Heat winners were Jason Stark, Dan Secor, John Olson and Ron Heller. Pete Arentz got a late start on his season in the Features Sports Bar Hornets division, but came away with one of the two features on Saturday night, as he chased down Chris Hartley for the win. Hartley took second, followed by Ryan Larson, Clinto Mohn and Pat Burchell. In the second feature, it was Troy Opsahl topping the field, with Nate Roesler well behind in second. Jason Jones, John Langard and Jerry Burke rounded out the top five. Heat winners were Jerrod Logging, Chris Hartley and Ty Burrows. Next week, one of the most exciting novelty events returns for the United Auto Supply Thunderstox, as they battle in the Second-Over-The-Line Wins event. Also on hand next Saturday night will be the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Models and Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman. On Sunday, May 27, the Bumble Rumble 200 Enduro will take to the track, with the green flag flying at 7:00 p.m. RACE SUMMARY Midwest Fuels
