May 26, 2001; West Salem, WI - When Mark Lamoreaux and Brad Powell tangled on the opening lap of the Bud Dash, and pulled into the pits, a lot of drivers at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway saw an opportunity to close in on Lamoreaux, the points leader. When he came out for the feature with the front end heavily damaged, they were ready to go for the win in the CenturyTel 25, and really put the pressure on. Lamoreaux had other plans.
On lap seven, when defending track champion Kevin Nuttleman got bumped by Tony Bagstad in turn one, Lamoreaux barely avoided the melee that brought out the lone yellow of the event. From then on, he went wherever he wanted on the track--outside of Todd Korish and Powell to move up to second, then inside of leader Mike Belling--for his third win of the season. Risk Wateski led through the lap seven yellow, which collected six cars behind Bagstad and Nuttleman, and ended with Jeff Krueger up on the wall in turn two. He held off both Todd Oliver and Belling early, but Belling was able to duck underneath him on lap ten to take the top spot. Powell and Korish followed underneath the lime green 93 of Wateski by lap 12, but Lamoreaux used the outside groove to get by him on lap 16 as he began his charge to the front. On lap 17, he moved by Korish, and took second on lap 18, again using the high line to get by Powell. He tried the upper groove on Belling, but on lap 20, Belling got loose, and Lamoreaux ducked under him in between turns three and four, and had taken the top spot by turn one. Fast qualifier Andy Burgess turned in his best performance of the season to finish second ahead of Belling, while Korish and Wateski held on to top five spots. Brent Kirchner finished sixth, followed by Oliver, Powell, Bagstad and Tim Hagen. Bill Niles won the semi-feature to advance to the feature, and Andy Burgess was fast timer for the third-straight week, clocking a 95.773 MPH lap. Heat wins wen to Steve Holzhausen and Greg Scheck. Brent Kirchner and Jeff Krueger took the Bud Dash wins The last thing Tom Thill wanted to see down the stretch of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature was a yellow flag, but when third-place driver Mike Campbell lost an engine with one lap to go, the field was bunched for the run to the checkered. Thill outgunned the field on the restart, and it was a good thing, as the cars battled three wide on the final lap to the finish. Thill took the win, followed by Jeff Baker, Blake Horstman, Jon Barrette and Tony Ciano. Chand Wehling was the big loser in the deal, as he lost a potential top five finish when he spun coming out of turn four to the checkered, and finished 21st. Aaron Hass won the semi, while heat wins went to Mike Albrecht, Jr. and John Korish, and Jimmy Gilster and Tom Thill won the heat races. Jon Barrette was fast timer at 22.786 seconds. Joe Rinartz and Troy Anderson waged a tremendous battle for the first eight laps of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but on lap nine, Rinartz spun in turn four, and Anderson took over the lead. Anderson crossed the finish line just ahead of Joey Johnson for an apparent win, but both cars failed post-race inspection, and Matt Inglett captured the victory. Dan Secor was second, followed by Bill Inglett, Al Bartels and Ed Senn. Jason Stark advanced to the feature by winning the semi, and Bill Inglett won the Bud Dash. heat winners were Joe Rinartz, Troy Anderson, Joey Johnson and Al Bartels, while Ron Heller won the Second Over the Line wins Novelty Event.
