Belling Fends off Red-Hot Nuttleman for Furniture Gallery 25 Title! By Pam Haller

June 22, 2002;  West Salem, WI - Mike Belling narrowly wins his first feature of the season. Mike Belling wins his first Late Model feature win Saturday night at the scorching LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Belling took the lead after two laps and held the lead until the end. It wasn't without pressure as Kevin Nuttleman worked his way up through the pack to challenge Belling for the win.

It looked like Nuttleman was going to take the lead over Belling until a caution was thrown with one lap to go. J. Herbst who took third place was at odds with fourth place finisher Mark Lamoreaux. Lamoreaux, with his fourth place finish puts him ahead of Brad Powell in the points race; Powell took a seventh place finish.

Rick Wateski beat out fellow LaCrosse native Brent Kirchner to take the fifth place position; Kirchner took sixth. Last weeks winner Steve Holzhausen ended up taking a disappointing twenty third despite his outstanding performance last week. Kraig Burrows and Andy Burgess ended up getting tangled up with one another on the frontstretch to bring up a caution, that tightened the pack and allowed for some hard racing. Both drivers were okay, and Burrows ended up getting back onto the track finishing in twenty-first.

Rick Steinhoff lead the whole fifteen Sportsman feature to take the checkered flag. Unfortunately Steinhoff ended up being dq'd allowing Dan Gilster to get the Sportsman feature win. Steinhoff and Dan Gilster were battling door to door the whole race. The great driving of Dan Gilster paid off for him in the end even though he won on through a technicality. Corey Jankowski ended up taking a hard fought second place finish over Dan Gilster's brother, Jimmy Gilster who took third.

Jeff Baker took a forth place spot, and Tony Ciano took fifth. Last weeks Sportsman feature winner Trent Boettcher ended up taking twelfth after such a great run last week. Jes Tenner, the Thunderstox semi-feature winner ended up taking twenty-first after colliding with Mike Campbell coming into turn three after nine laps. Branden Berg, the Sportsman semi-feature winner, ended up taking a disappointing twenty-second after having a great run in the feature until he had apparent car problems.

Joey Johnson of Mindoro took the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature Saturday night. Matt Inglett took second, Nicholas Schroeder took third, Brad Wathan took fourth, and Dwayne Anderson took fifth. Saturday also featured the ever so popular Queen Bees racing challenge with Christie Anderson taking the checkered flag.

Saturday night was also the stage for the fan photo night. The event featured all the drivers who were set to race Saturday pulled onto the track lined up by number and handing out photos and other miscellaneous items. It was a great chance for the fans to see their favorite drivers up close and in the light of day.
