Nuttleman charges to victory
at LaCrosse!
By Pam Haller |
July 6,
2002; West Salem, WI - On a hot and humid night at the
LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, Kevin Nuttleman proved why he is a seven-time Kwik Trip
NASCAR Late Model track champion, as he claimed the Quillin's 25. Outside front row
starter Tim Nelson got out to an early lead, receiving several challenges lap after lap
from pole sitter Tony Bagstad.

Kevin Nuttleman (#4) who has won seven
track titles here at the LaCrosse, took a big step toward getting another when he won the
feature contest this evening in NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Late Model action. |

On lap six, Bagstad took the lead while a melee was developing in turn
three. A four car wreck involving Steve Carlson, Mike Belling, J. Herbst, and Kevin
Eddy resulted in severe damage to Carlson's Dodge Intrepid. On the restart, Tony
Bagstad resumed the lead through the Outback Steakhouse halfway lap. Points leader
Nuttleman, with his smooth style of driving, was able to drive his way to the front on lap
16, where he stayed until the checkered flag. The win didn't come easy, as a late
race caution for Todd Oliver's spin brought Charlie Menard right to Nuttleman's bumper.
"Finishing second to Nuttleman is like a win for us," commented runner-up
Menard!
. "I thought we had been slipping a little bit the past two
weeks, so we changed a few things" commented Nuttleman. Barry (Wehrs- Car
owner) put on some new shocks, and it made a world of difference. Tonight it was
really hooked up," concluded Nuttleman. Tony Bagstad and Todd Korish wound up third
and fourth in a green-white-checkered finish.
The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman Quillin's 15 went wire
to wire without a yellow. However, the race didn't go without suspense. On lap
seven, the car of point leader Jeff Baker broke loose with a flat tire and almost took a
few cars with him, but all regained control and resumed. Corey Jankowski, the
fastest qualifier, was determined to prove how fast his car was. He charged from his 11th
place starting position and muscled his car into the lead by lap nine. Jankowski was
able to drive his car home to a victory and into the points lead. Finishing second
through fifth were Doug Lee, Marv DeGarmo, Tom Thill and John Korish.
The United Auto Supply Thunderstox Quillin's 15 started out with a wild
wreck on lap one. A four car crash sent three cars to the pits for repairs, and the
cars of Derrick Caulum Sr. and Dan Erdman had too much damage to continue. The race
finished without any more cautions, but fans witnessed double-duty driver Jes Tenner
charge from his 22nd starting position to second by lap 12. Tenner ran out of room
as Branden Berg, who took the lead on the first lap, was able to fend off Tenner.
Rounding out the top five were Grant Kutchara, Kurt Jankowski, and rookie Nicholas
Schroeder.
