Burgess Charges to Victory at
LaCrosse!
By Pam Haller |
July 20,
2002; West Salem, WI - The race track was as hot as the air
on Saturday night at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, as Eau Claire's Andy Burgess took
home the Brickl Bros. 50 lap feature. With a little luck, and a few yellows, 11th place
starter Burgess was able to work his way to the front by the time the checkered waved.
LaCrescent's Tim Nelson led the first two laps, before Mike Belling
overtook the lead. Paul Proksch, who is competing on a limited schedule, was able to pass
Belling going into turn three on the high side. He was able to control the lead until lap
35, when the hard-charging Burgess put the pressure on Proksch.
With ten laps to go, the cars of Rick Wateski and Blake Horstman tangled,
and sent them both into the turn four wall and out of the race. That allowed Proksch,
Steve Holzhausen and Points leader Kevin Nuttleman to close right on the rear bumper of
Burgess' number 85 car. A ten lap shootout remained, and Burgess, who always seems to
capitalize in the longer races, was able to hold off any challenges. Finishing in the top
five behind Burgess were Proksch, Holzhausen, Nuttleman, and Brad Powell.
West Salem's Jimmy Gilster earned the Brickl Bros. 15 for the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand
National Sportsman Division. Pole starter Tony Ciano led laps one through nine, but
Gilster overtook the lead on the high side on lap ten. Going into turn two the next lap
saw top guns Corey Jankowski, Chand Wehling, Marv DeGarmo and Dan Gilster involved in a
multi-car wreck. all but DeGarmo were able to continue. When the race resumed with five
laps to go, Gilster took it home for his first feature win of the season. A late race
charge by Tom Thill threatened the Gilster victory, but wound up short. Rounding out the
top five were Ciano, Sam Andersen and Trent Boettcher.
The United Auto Supply Thunderstox Brickl Bros. 15 lap feature had everything a short
track needs - three and four wide racing, a few spins, and suspense, as championship
contender Ron Heller ran into problems on lap one. A four car melee on the backstretch put
Heller a lap down. Dan Erdman led all fifteen laps en route to his second feature win of
the season.
