Holzhausen Takes Control at LaCrosse!
By Pam Haller

July 27, 2002;  West Salem, WI - The heat of the summer continued, on and off the track at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Before the Budweiser 25 lap Kwik Trip Late Model Feature had even one lap completed, about half the field found themselves facing the wrong direction.

Photo Highlights

A thirteen car melee occured on the frontstretch as the leaders crossed the line after the first lap. A scary moment it was for Mark Lamoreaux, whose car hit the wall and was pushed up on its driver's side before dropping down to all four tires. Cars throughout the field spun and blocked the entire race track, causing a red flag. When the race resumed, Tim Hagen took the point, with Steve Holzhausen, Troy Goodenough, and Brad Powell in tow. Hagen led through the Outback Steakhouse halfway lap, but was overtaken the following lap by a determined Holzhausen. Powell was also able to slide under Hagen for second.

A five car accident in turn three caused the race's only other caution, which involved Brent Kirchner, Jon Barrette, Blake Horstman, Bill Niles, and Jim Christenson. The race resumed, with Holzhausen dominating the last ten laps, barely beating out Powell. Rounding out the top five were Hagen, posting his career-best finish, Rick Wateski, and Goodenough.

The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman drivers must have learned a lesson from the late model feature. They drove wire-to-wire without any yellows, but the race didn't lack any excitement. Battles throughout the pack kept the fans on their feet. Stoddard's Chand Wehling, who led the first fourteen laps, was so close to scoring a win. However, Todd Korish, substitute driving cousin Lucas' truck, had other ideas. Korish went from third with three laps to go to passing Wehling on the outside in turns three and four scoring his first Sportsman feature win in three years.

Thunderstox veteran Bill Inglett scored another feature win in the Bud 15, which saw spins, thrills and spills. Inglett fought young rookie Tony Leis side-by-side for the last seven laps, as Inglett narrowly edged Leis to the checkered. Finishing third through fifth were Chad Rosendahl, Jes Tenner, and Kurt Jankowski.
