Powell Too Hot to Handle!

10, 2002; West Salem, WI - The River City Ready Mix
night at the races featured the second most cars during regular racing in LaCrosse
Fairgrounds Speedway history with 197 cars. The track was red hot and so was Brad
Powell who worked his way through the pack to come up with his second win of the season.
Powell thundered his way past Mike Belling, with eight laps to go to gain
and hold the lead till the end. Powell had struggled a bit during the beginning of
the season but it looks like his car is ready to close out the season well. Brent
Kirchner snaked by Mike Beling coming out of turn four of the last lap to snatch the
second place position away from Mike Belling.
Fourth place finisher Dan Stelle, a rookie, and fifth place finisher Paul
Proksch were neck and neck in a heated battle for the number four spot. The race started
out with yet another first lap maylay that included Todd Korish, John Towner, and Tony
Bagstad. The trio got tangled up coming out of turn four and leaving Tony Bagstad
smashed up against the wall on the front stretch. Last weeks feature winner Kevin
Nuttleman ended up taking seventh after his fifth win of the season last week.
The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman, River City Ready Mix 15 was equally
exciting. Larry Bolster of Sparta, Wisconsin held onto the lead despite a couple of
restarts and a tenacious pack of cars on his bumper. Larry Bolster who raced hard to
keep the lead forfeited his win to Chand Wheling after failing a post race inspection.
It would have been Bolster's first feature win of the season.
Wheling was in the hunt for the second place position racing door to door
with second place finisher Tom Thill the whole race. Wheling took the lead
over Thill after six laps and they kept on until the end. Corey Jankowski, Dan
Linnehan, and Dan Gilster would round out the top five. The Sportsman division
wasn't without crashes as Scott Beckler and Jeff Baker got tangled up in turn two with ten
laps remaining leaving Jeff Baker with a flat tire.
The Rookie Steve Scholz took the checkered flag in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox
River City Ready Mix 15. Scholz of Sparta, Wisconsin maintained his lead the whole
race with a confident win over the rest of the cars. Scholz held onto the lead
despite several restarts that involved several thrills and spills.
Saturday night featured the Features Sports Bar & Grill Hornet
division Racing action. Onalaska, Wisconsin's own Ryan Larson took the checkered
flag in a very exciting race with plenty of metal mangling mayhem that the Hornets bring
to the table at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway.
