Nuttleman Takes Classic Battle!
By Pam Haller

April 20, 2002;  West Salem, WI - It looked like Oktoberfest, it even felt like Oktoberfest. With temperatures in the low 40's the drivers did their best to keep the racing hot. The field of nearly 175 in four divisions, thrilled the crowd with close racing Saturday night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway

Photo Highlights

Kevin Nuttleman started the feature outside row four and steadily reeled in his competition. He was able to avoid a multi-car crash only three laps into the feature. Rick Wateski went into four and broke loose. That's what started it all. A total of eight cars were involved and all but last weeks feature winner J. Herbst, were able to continue. On the restart, Todd Korish had a mirror full of Ronnie Hawley, Jr. and they raced that way until the yellow was thrown for a spin involving Kraig Burrows. On the restart, Korish again led the field, but this time his mirror was full of seven time champion, Kevin Nuttleman. It took Nuttleman three laps to make it around Korish, but had to battle, fast qualifier Steve Holzhausen for the win.

The NASCAR Kwik Trip Late Models started the excitement during their qualifying heats. The paint swapping looked as if it was one of the last races of the season, not one of the first. On the start, rookie late model drivers, John Barrette and John Towner spun as they drove into turn one. That resulted in a complete restart. Halfway through the heat, 2001 Late Model Champion Brad Powell, looped his Ford Taurus, bringing out another caution. With a handful of laps to go, La Crosse's Mike Belling took the lead and never looked back. In one of the other heat races, Kevin Nuttleman and Troy Goodenough came together out of two, sending Goodenough through the grass. J. Herbst led them on the restart and ended his evening in victory lane.

The Grand National Sportsman drivers did their part to make Saturday night a great night of racing. Hometown favorite, Jimmy Gilster started the feature near the front. That was the place to be because behind them their were tires falling off and cars breaking loose. Five laps into the feature, Corey Jankowski blew his right front tire going down the front stretch. He was able to limp his car into the pits and avoid a yellow flag. He later rejoined the field. Only a couple of laps later, five cars were involved in a wreck that landed Dan Gilster into the wall between three and four. Gilster's brother Jimmy Gilster, took the lead with five laps to go and stayed there through the checkered flag.

The Thunderstocks sailed through their heats and features smootly. Well, as smooth as Thunderstocks can be. They too, had their share of "rubbin is racin". In the end, Ed Senn was able to work his way around the track and be the one to end his night in victory lane.

It was the first race of the season for the hornet drivers. Heath Weissenberger, Rick Schermerhor, and Pete Arentz won their heats. Gary Towner and Jim Schermerhorn outlasted the field and won their features.

The night ended with the fans heading home to dig out their shovels. Yes, Sunday was to bring us a winter storm. Can you believe it!
