By Philip Jahnke |
September
7, 2002; West Salem, WI - Kevin Nuttleman has
officially took the honor of being the Kwik Trip Late Model track champion of the 2002
seson Saturday night. Nuttleman locked into that didtinction last week with his third
place finish.
Nuttleman who raced Saturday with his teammate Blake Horstman's car after
blowing his engine in hot lap action earlier that day aded to his point total by taking
fourth. Nuttleman has now ben the track champion eight times in his career.
He didn't really have a game plan coming into the season but his main
effort was to stay out of trouble and keeping the car runing great. Kevin credits his
success to a great running car, a great team, a great sponsor, and a bit of luck.
Nuttleman wasn't the only champion Saturday as Brad Powell raced very hard to get his
third feature win of the season.
Powell worked his way up through the pack to fight it out on the last few
laps with Charlie Menard who took second; Menard ws the fast qualifyer of the night. Steve
Holzhausen who also worked his way through traffic ended up tkaing third, and Brent
Kirchner ended th night with a fifth place finish. The action on the track was disturbed
due to three restarts that included John Towner spinning out with twelve to go, Ken
Christenson getting loose with six to go, and Mike Belling who hit the wall hard and ended
up being towed off the track with four to go.
Spotrsman racing was hard, fast, and full of action and victorious for Dan
Gilster. Dan Gilster, a former track champion ,who started fifth at the start worked his
way up racing hard and getting the right line to gain the lead and take off to a sizable
lead and take the checkered flag and his second win of the season. Dan Gilster took the
lead on lap seven over third place finisherTom Thill. The top five positions were changing
on every lap with great race action that featured Tony Ciano taking second, and Dan's
brother Jimmy Gilster taking fourth, and trent Boettcher takinf fifth.
The race action in the Ray Hutson Sportsman feature was disrupted as Lucas
Korish hit hard in turn four with four to go to bring up the only caution of the night.
Ed Senn won a hard fought first palce finish, an all expenses paid trip to
victory lane, and a feature win in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. To round
out the top five, Shane Ulvestad, Andy Moore, John Hendrickson, and Al Bartels
respecfully.
The Features Sports Bar & Grill Horntes were also in action Saturday
night putting on a great show for the fans at the LaCrosse fairgrounds speedway featuring
three features and one heck of a showing by the four cylinder wonders.
