Flying sheetmetal and fire balls a winning combination at LaCrosse!
By Philip Jahnke

September 14, 2002;  West Salem, WI - Bus burning, trailer flipping, T-bone crashing, bus racing, Hornet racing extravaganza featured at the exhilarating LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway annual Eve Of Destruction. The destruction featured 16 novelty events to include the always exciting and down right hilarious, trailer race of destruction that looked like a freak accident on the interstate on the commute home from the lake with boats, campers, and motorcycles laid strewed all over the race track. Dan Erdman won the trailer race by getting the most applause from the fans.

As a grand finale the Green Mamba Jet Car backed up to a school bus, started up the car and the enormous flames that were shouting out the back of the car turned that bus into a skeleton. Saturday  wasn't just about destruction, as the points race in the Features Sports Bar & Grill Hornets division and the novelty events division came to an end.

Todd Lemke came out on top of the Hornets points with 323 points to become the Hornets 2002 season Champion.  Rounding out the top five were Rick Placek Jr. with 298, Eric Komprud with 279, Jerrod Loging with 279, and Kevin turner with 274 points.

Jake Arneson was dubbed the 2002 novelty events champion by ending the season with 106 points.  Curt Janikowski ended the season with 94, Tony Leis with 81, Dan Erdman with 76, and Ray Hardie to round out the top five with 72 points on the season.   The novelty events division racers competed in fan favorite races throughout the season to include the trailer race of destruction, second over the line wins,  and the double spin to win.

The carnage at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway also included monster truck racing, T-bone crashes, a roll over contest, and the always exciting spectacular drags.  The spectacular drags allows a non-racing person to get out onto the track and to show the fans what they are made of.  The end of the night after the fans went to the pits, the long clean up after the trailer race and the preparation for the Oktoberfest  weekend races began.

The four day event will be held on October 3-4-5-6  and will feature a RE/MAX Challenge Series 250 lap feature on Sunday October 6th.  The racing action begins on Thursday with local race action to include the Thunderstox and Spotsman divisions.  Friday and Saturday night will feature the CWRA, IMCA modified, the NASCAR Northern Racing Series, Wisconsin Late Models, the Planet MA Stock Car and Truck series, and many other racing divisions.

The weekend will also offer more than just great racing, it will feature a whole plethora of fun and exciting events to please the whole family.
