Schendel Scores First Career First at LaCrosse! By Pam Haller

May 18, 2002;  West Salem, WI - Tim Schendel scored his first NASCAR Weekly Racing Series feature win during the Saturday night May 18th at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

When the green flag dropped, Schendel was in the fourth the fourth position and quickly worked his way to the second spot.  Todd Oliver, running his first full season after securing a major sponsor in A-1 Glass, started on the poll but had his hands full with the hard-charging Schendel, who is a regular on the NASCAR RE/MAX Challenge Series.

A multi-car crash on the lap four tightened the field, but Oliver refused to relinquish the lead. The Bangor, Wis., driver held off the field for the next four laps, but Schendel engaged in a little cat-and-mouse game when he faked a move to the inside groove, then bolted to the outside on lap eight. He grabbed the lead and held it through one more caution to earned his first Kwik Trip Late Model Division feature victory. A crowd that was forced to sit on their hands to thwart off the chilly temperature, rose to its feet as Schendel rolled car No. 21 into victory lane.

"I've had a lot of seconds and top-five finishes here, but never won a feature," Schendel said. "I've run really well but never sealed the deal. When we moved up to RE/MAX, I never had time to put together a good Saturday night program."

Oliver, who entered the night third in the Late Model points standings, held on to finish a career-high second. Mark Lamoreaux, who finished second in the 2001 season points standings, took third, followed by seven-time track champion Kevin Nuttleman of Bangor. Rounding out the top five was Blake Horstman, a rookie in the Late Model Division.
 Eau Claire, Wis., driver Andy Burgess, a 12-time fast qualifier a year ago, turned in the fastest qualfying lap when he stopped the clock at 20.018 seconds. Burgess, however,  ran into some tough luck in the feature event when he was involved in one of two crashes and was forced to pull into the pits.

In the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman Division, Melrose driver Sam Andersen won the 15-lap feature race when he edged former track champion Jeff Baker of Holmen. Dan Gilster, who had the fastest qualifying lap, finished third.

Rookie Dan Erdman won the United Auto Supply Thundertsox Division feature race, his first checkered flag in the division. Jason Schaller of La Crosse took second, while Jake Arneson of Taylor took third.
