Nuttleman claims second La
Crosse win!
By David Morgan |
June 14,
2003; West Salem, WI - After missing the opening
week of the season with a broken foot, eight-time track champion Kevin Nuttleman worked
his way into the top ten in points, and served further notice that he is still a factor in
the points race by taking his second NASCAR Late Model win of the season on Saturday
night.

Kwik Trip NASCAR Dodge Racing Series Late Model feature win of the year at the LaCrosse
Fairgrounds Speedway. |

The start of the late model feature was delayed, as an accident between
Chris Skrede and Morris Proctor in the Grand National Sportsman B-main slowed the action,
as safety crews worked to extricate Proctor from his 85 Olds Cutlass. Skrede and Proctor
came together in turn two, and Proctor rode the wall, before coming to rest in the middle
of the backstretch. Proctor was momentarily unconscious, and had to be cut from his car as
the racing action was delayed for 48 minutes. Proctor was flown by MedLink helicopter to a
local hospital, but initial reports indicated he suffered only a broken arm in the
incident.
In the late model feature, Troy Goodenough and Jim Hagel battled for the
first three laps side by side at the front of the 25-car field, until Bill Niles spun into
the infield on the backstretch, and older brother Andy Niles also spun in trying to avoid
contact, bringing out the yellow.
On the restart, Nuttleman went to work, first going to the outside to slip
by Todd Korish and Goodenough, looking quickly to the inside, before taking the high line
to pass Hagel for the point on lap five. Further back in the field, Tony Bagstad led
another charge to the front, with Todd Oliver, Charlie Menard, J. Herbst and Blake
Horstman also quickly moving up through the field.
Bagstad was the only one who was able to make a move on Nuttleman, as he
got by Korish on lap eight, then moved into second with an outside pass of Hagel five laps
later. By then, Nuttleman had an eight-car advantage at the front, but Bagstad began to
slowly close the gap.
Menard followed Bagstad up to third, and Dodge Weekly Series Heartland
Regional points leader Steve Holzhausen and Brad Powell began a late charge, but all eyes
were glued on Bagstad as he slowly reigned in Nuttleman.
By lap 20, Nuttleman had lapped traffic to deal with, and three laps later, Bagstad was on
his bumper. While the 27 car was able to track down the leader, in the final two laps, he
could only look to the outside, but didnt have enough left to try a pass, as
Nuttleman claimed the checkered.
Bagstad was second, followed by Menard, Korish and Holzhausen. Powell,
Hagel, Horstman, Herbst and rookie Adam Degenhardt rounded out the top ten.
Curt Eckelberg won the B-main to advance to the feature, while the Bud
Dash wins went to Bill Niles and Nuttleman. Qualifying heats were won by Dave Bean and
John Towner, while Powell turned in the fast time at 96.099 MPH.
In the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature, Tom Thill and Chand Wehling
battled side by side at the front for six laps, with Thill leading the first three, and
Wehling the next three. On lap seven, Thill slid up the track a bit, allowing Wehling to
pull down clearly into the lead, and Wehling cruised to the victory.
Thill held off Jeff Baker for second, while Randy Steinhoff and Sam
Andersen finished fourth and fifth. Rick Steinhoff, Jimmy Gilster, Rick Shisler, Dan
Gilster and Larry Bolster, Jr. rounded out the top ten.
Dan Gilster was fast timer, at 85.787 MPH, while the Bud Dash wins went to
Andersen and Rick Steinhoff. Qualifying heats were won by Jeff Winterfield and Shawn
Lockington, and the non qualifying heat went to Tony Ciano. Jordan Hess won the B-main,
which was red flagged for 48 minutes after the Skrede-Proctor accident.
Jamie Dummer led all but one-half lap of the United Auto Supply
Thunderstox feature, and came across the line in second, but claimed the win when Brad
Warthan failed post-race inspection. Dummer held a 6-car advantage for much of the race,
before Warthan chased him down. Kris Budhaupt, Al Bartels, John Hendrickson and Bill
Inglett rounded out the top five, while Emily Sue Steck, Joey Johnson, Jerry Aylesworth,
Greg Lindvig and Ben Allen finished 6th through 10th.
Ron Heller won the B-main, Tim Steinhoff won the Bud Dash, and heat wins
went to Bartels, Dummer, Hendrickson and Warthan. Matt Inglett won the Novelty Event,
second over the line wins.
