Holzhausen solidifies
Dodge Weekly Series lead with 3rd La Crosse win!
By David Morgan |
June 21,
2003; West Salem, WI - At the start of the
season, the big question for Steve Holzhausen was whether or not he was going to race each
and every week at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, and go for his first NASCAR Late
Model track championship, and second track title overall. The question now might be
whether or not he wants to go for the bigger payout of the Dodge Weekly Seriess
Heartland Regional and National Championships.
On Saturday night, he may well of answered that on the track, as he got by
Blake Horstman on lap 17, and took his third feature win of the season. The win solidifies
his hold on the top spot in the Heartland Regional points standings, which he has led for
two straight weeks heading into Saturdays action.
Troy Goodenough took to the lead from his pole-sitting starting position,
and Jim Hagel followed into second, before Horstman moved by Hagel on the outside on lap
four. Two laps later Greg Scheck lost an engine heading into turn three, bringing out the
yellow for oil on the track. The cars got in just one lap on the restart, but that was
enough for Horstman to move to the outside, and pass Goodenough for the lead.
The second caution came on lap seven, when Tony Bagstad tagged Jim Hagel
from behind in turn three, sending the CC106.3 car spinning into the wall hard. J. Herbst
and Mike Belling also came to rest along the wall, as they were unable to avoid the
incident. Hagel was unconscious when safety crews reached him, and was transported by
ambulance to a local hospital.
On the restart, Horstman took command, while Todd Korish led a charge on
the outside around Goodenough, with Holzhausen and Kevin Nuttleman in tow. On lap 11,
Holzhausen moved to the outside of Korish down the front stretch, and made the pass for
second in turn one. Korish then battled Nuttleman for third the rest of the way, finally
settling for fourth behind the Wehrs Chevy Monte Carlo of Nuttleman.
Holzhausen closed on Horstman, and on laps 15 and 16, he was able to pull
inside of the 75 car coming out of turn four, but by turn one, Horstman was able to come
down in front to hold the top spot. On the next lap, Horstman protected the inside groove,
and Holzhausen went ouside, pulling alongside Horstman as the pair headed into one, and
taking the lead for good as the cars hit turn three.
The win was Holzhausens third of the season, and solidified his hold
on the top spot in both the track and regional standings. Brad Powell finished fifth,
followed by Rick Wateski, Mark Lamoreaux, Todd Oliver, Goodenough, and Jon Barrette.
There was no qualifying because of Fan Photo Night, and cars were lined up
by points for the evenings action. Jeff Krueger won the B-main, heat wins went to
Bill Niles and Dan Steele, while the Bud Dashes were won by Scheck and Wateski.
Rick Shisler led all 15 laps of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman
feature, but you couldnt say his 2-car length win over Sam Andersen was easy.
Shisler had to survive three double-file restarts, and one single file restart, as he held
off Andersen for the feature win. Four yellows slowed the race, but Shisler held off
whatever car chose the outside lane, and on the final restart, he pulled out to a quick
2-car lead over Andersen, and held it for the final five laps.
Andersen was second, followed by Trent Boettcher, Rick Steinhoff and Dan Gilster. Tom
Thill, Lucas Korish, Dan Linnehan, Randy Steinhoff and John Olson rounded out the top ten.
Shawn Lockington won the B-main, heat winners were Dan Erdman, Doug Lee,
Jamie Millis and Lucas Korish. The Bud Dash wins went to Scott Beckler and Aaron Hass.
There were also two quick yellows in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox
feature, but once again, leader Tory Lockington was up to the challenge, as he posted a
dominating full straightaway feature win. Part of the reason that Lockington was able to
pull away was the battles for second, third and fourth behind him, as cars were two-, and
sometimes three-wide for most of the race. At the checkered, it was Joey Johnson taking
the runner-up spot, followed by Matt Inglett, Scott Voss and points-leader Ron Heller, who
advanced to the feature by winning the B-Main.
Tuxedo Tony Leis won the Bud Dash, and heat wins went to Brad Warthan,
Dwayne Anderson, Wayne Smith and Tim Steinhoff.
