Powell Proves Point With
First LaCrosse Win!
By David Morgan |
June 28,
2003; West Salem, WI - In a mid-season summary of
the racing season in the local paper, a local scribe said that Brad Powell was still a
threat to challenge points leader Steve Holzhausen for the track championship, despite
being in third place, and without a feature win. Powell proved the writers point by
going out and winning the feature on Clason Pontiac-Buick-GMC night at the races, and
putting pressure on both Holzhausen and second-place Tony Bagstad in the points race.
The win put Powell in a second-place tie with Bagstad. Todd Oliver fought
off Adam Degenhardt to take the lead on the second lap, with Brad Powell using the outside
line to take over the second apot on lap 3. Degenhardt continued to slip through the
field, as Todd Korish went to the outside, and led Rick Wateski through to the front,
before Degenhardt, spun in turn two on lap five, bringing out the caution.
Powell made his move on the restart, jumping to the outside of Oliver, and
pulling even with the 20 car as they passed the line for lap six. Oliver battled on the
inside, but as the cars went into turn three on the next lap, Powell had the lead.
While Powell started to open up a lead on the field, Steve Holzhausena nd Kevin Nuttleman
began moving up rom the back of the field, climbing into the top ten by lap ten.
On lap 12, Greg Scheck wiggled as the cars came down the frontstretch, and
nearly had his Monte Carlo under control, but hit Troy Goodenough in turn one, causing a
three-car incident that also collected B-main winner Tom McClintock.
Powell began to open up his lead again, as Korish moved to the outside to try to get by
Oliver for second. Oliver was able to hold him off, and Wateski slipped by Korish in the
inside to take over third on lap 14. two laps later, Wateski took the high side, and
slipped by Oliver in turn three, and began to attempt to chase down the race leader.
The battles for second bunched up the top ten, and kept both Holzhausen
and Nuttleman, the only multiple winners on the season thus far, well back of the front.
While Wateski closed on Powell, it was not nearly enough, as Powell took the win by five
car-lengths. Wateski finished second, followed by Bagstad, Oliver, Blake Horstman and J.
Herbst. Nuttleman, Holzhausen, Charlie Menard and Mike Belling rounded out the top ten.
Tom McClintock took the B-main, the heat win went to Greg Scheck, and Bud
Dash checkereds to Menard and Oliver. Holzhausen was fast timer at 96.146 MPH.
John Korish jumped to the lead of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman
feature early, but had former track champs Jeff Baker and Dan Gilster right on his bumper
by lap three. led the entire way. Korish was able to hold off both Baker and Gilster to
the checkered flag, but not beyond, as he was disqualified in post-race inspection,
handing Baker his first feature win of the season.
Gilster was second, followed by Dan Linnehan, Mike Albrecht, Jr., and
Larry Bolster, Jr.
Albrecht, Jr. was fast timer at 86.258 MPH, and Dan Erdman won the B-Main.
Heat wins went to Sam Andersen and Nick Schoedger, while points leader Chand Wehling and
Jamie Millis won Bud Dashes.
Jason Schaller went to the lead, and opened a four car advantage early in
the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but Mary Schill and Brad Warthan closed the
gap, and came up by lap eight, making it a three-car battle for the front. Warthan ducked
underneath Schill, and the two cars raced side by side behind the leader for several laps.
With four laps remaining, Schill moved up to challenge Schaller, but couldnt make it
stick, as Schaller took the win, and Warthan edged Schill at the finish for second.
Matt Inglett won the B-main, Danielle Neary won the Bud Dash, and heat
wins went to Schill, Lance Lee, Schaller and Lonnie Klonecki.
Andre Klonecki started in row three of the first feature for the Features
Sports Bar and Grill Hornets, but quickly jumped to the front, and was battling Nate
Towner until lap five, when a multi-car incident in turn two brought out the yellow.
Towner spun in turn two after the restart, but managed to keep out of harms way, as Rick
Schermerhorn, who started 26th, moved up to take over second. Schermerhorn took just four
more laps before he went to the outside, and took over the lead, as he cruised to the win.
Klonecki took second, followed by Ryan Happel, Pete Arentz and Jared Heaney.
In the second feature, Jerry Lemke was not about to let anyone chase him
down, as he pulled out to a half lap lead and looked to be cruising to an easy win. On lap
nine, while trying to navigate lapped traffic, he rear-ended Dennis Nelson on the
backstretch, and lost power for just long enough to let several cars not only catch him,
but make their way by. Ryan Lockington was the main benefactor, as he took the lead, and
held off Jim Shermerhorn for the win.
Scott Buhrow went to the lead in the third feature, with Steve Bornitz
hanging with him, and Dave Dwyer and John Eron making it a four-car battle at the front.
On lap five, Bornitz moved to the lead into turn one, but spun in front of the lead pack
coming out of two, forcing Buhrow and Eron to hit the binders, and allowing Dwyer to move
by on the outside to take the lead. Dwyer held the point the rest of the way, as he
claimed his first checkered flag, with John Eron, Matt Miller and Brian Warner following
him across the line.
Heat winners in the division were Klonecki, Ryan Happel and Nate Towner.
