Menard is third to take multiple wins at La Crosse!
By David Morgan

July 5, 2003;  West Salem, WI - Charlie Menard picked up his first-ever regular season late model win at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway earlier this season, and on Saturday night, he did what eight-time champ Kevin Nuttleman couldn't do, as he moved by J. Herbst to take the lead, as he posted his second win of the season. He joins Kevin Nuttleman and Steve Holzhausen as two-time winners on the season.

Nuttleman tried for two laps to get by Herbst early in the race, and fell to third when Menard lined up behind the leader, and moved by Nuttleman on the inside. Menard, however, was able to get by Herbst on the outside without help, as he pulled to the lead and held on for the win.

The feature was delayed when lights on the backtretch went out, then again with a four-car incident in the opening turn. J. Herbst took two laps to move by Mike Belling and into the lead, but on lap four, Belling brought out the second caution, when he spun in turn one in front of the field, collecting Rick Wateski, Blake Horstman, Todd Korish, Todd Oliver, John Towner and Bill Niles.

The wreck spread out the field, and helped Kevin Nuttleman, Charlie Menard and Tony Bagstad, who moved up to second, third and fourth with the accident. Nuttleman made his move on the restart, and ducked underneath Herbst heading into turn three, but Herbst was able to edge down and hold onto the top spot. On lap 6, Nuttleman went to the outside, and pulled alongside the leader, as Menard came up to make it a three-car battle at the front.
Menard was able to push Herbst back into the lead, and Nuttleman was forced to fall back in line behind the 17 car of Menard.

On lap nine, Menard looked to the outside of Herbst, and was able to edge into the lead himself, but as Nuttleman debated which driver to draft, Menard was able to pull down into the lead. The third yellow flew on lap 13, as Nuttleman and Herbst battled for second, when they touched, sending Herbst around, and forcing Nuttleman to hit the binders to avoid a collision. Both cars went to the rear of the field on the restart.

Menard paced the field on the restart, this time with NASCAR Touring Series veterans Tony Bagstad and Steve Holzhausen on his rear bumper. Menard, who had earlier set fast time, took little time in opening up his lead, and extending it to six car lengths by lap 16, when Holzhausen moved by Bagstad on the outside for second.
Jon Barrette survived two late cautions to win the B-Main, Jeff Krueger won the only heat, and the Bud Dash wins went to J. Herbst and Mike Belling. Charlie Menard was fast timer at 95.977 MPH.

Trent Boettcher and Larry Bolster Jr pulled away from the field early in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature, but Rick Steinhoff was able to chase them down, passing Bolster for second on lap seven, and closing in on the leader by lap ten, and quickly looking to Boettcher's outside.
Boettcher was able to hold off every move Steinhoff made, but on lap 12, Nick Schroeder spun on the backstretch, bringing out the yellow, and forcing a two wide reatart. Boettcher took control again on the restart, and pulled away for the win, leaving Steinhoff in second in front of Bolster, Jr., Jeff Baker and Mike Albrecht, Jr.

Nick Schroeder took the B-Main, Jamie Schlintz won the C-Main, heat winners were Joe Rinartz, Jordan Hess and Sam Andersen. The Bud Dash wins went to the Gilster boys, Dan and Jimmy. Randy Steinhoff was fast timer at 85.780 MPH.
Dean Ashbacher took over the lead from Justin Berg three laps into the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, and had the race well in hand, but almost lost it with three laps to go, as he tried maneuver by a lapped car, he went wide in turn two, and had to break hard to avoid the wall. He managed to keep the car off the wall, and maintained his lead, taking the feature win

Ben Allen won the B-Main, Ed Senn took the Bud Dash, heat winners were Eugene Vian, Lester Stanfield, Justin Berg and Ryan Pfaff, while the twin Double Spin to win novelty events went to Stanfield and Jason Bolster.
