Holzhausen Recovers for
Third La Crosse Win!
By David Morgan |
July 26,
2003; West Salem, WI - One week ago, Steve Holzahsuen
was battling Charlie Menard late in the 50-lap feature, and the two cars ended up in the
turn one wall with severe damage. This week, Holzhausen was not only back on the track,
but he chased down Kevin Eddy and claimed his third feature win of the season.

Steve Holzhausen (#78) the current point
leader in the the Kwik Trip Late Model division scored his third main event win of the
season here at LaCrosse. |
|
Holzhausen took advantage of a couple of Brad Powell moves to get to the
front, first following Powell inside of Todd Korish to push the two into second and third.
Four laps later, Powell went for the lead, but slid high through the turns, allowing
Holzhausen to slip by into second, and one lap later Holzhausen was in the lead.
Eddy outgunned Tim Hagen at the start, and opened up a six car advantage
at the front by lap five. Todd Oliver, Korish and Powell battled for second, with Korish
and Powell finally moving by Oliver on lap seven. Steve Holzhausen followed by Oliver a
lap later, and the three cars began closing in on the leader.
On lap nine, Powell ducked underneath Korish heading into turn one, and
took over second onthe backstretch, with Holzhausen moving up to slide underneath the 32
car as well. on lap 13, Powell took the high line on the backstretch, and motored by Eddy
at the start finish line, but then slid up the track in turn one, allowing both Eddy and
Holzhausen by on the inside.
Once cleared of Powell, Holzhausen went to the outside, and passed Eddy on
lap 14, and pulled away from the early race leader. On lap 16, Powell once more go by
Eddy, but was five car lengths back of Holzhausen, trying to pick up ground.
Holzhausen held Powell at bay the rest of the way for the win, with Kevin Nuttleman,
Charlie Menard and J. Herbst moving up late to take spots in the top five.
Mark Lamoreaux took the B-Main, with Menard taking fast time at 96.222
MPH. Heat winners were Monte Gress and Dexter Bean, while Rick Wateski and Blake Horstman
won dashes.
Rick Shisler took the lead early, and survived two mid race cautions to
take the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature, his second of the season.
Shisler led the first seven laps of the Ray Hutson Chevy Sportsman
feature, with Trent Boettcher and Jes Tenner making it a three-car runaway at the front.
That lasted until Jeff Baker spun on the backstretch on lap eight, and there was some
contact with three other cars, bringing out the yellow.
On the restart, the first three cars chose the inside lane, with Chand
Wehling taking the outside line. That proved to be a bad decisioin, as Wehling appeared to
cut a tired as the cars went into turn one, and hit the turn one wall hard.
A spectacular wreck on the frontstretch happened two laps later, as Jimmy Gilster and Bill
Miller collided on the frontstretch, sending both cars around. As Jeff Baker ducked low to
avoid the cars, he ran up the front end of the Gilster car, sending him airborn into turn
one.
Boettcher put more pressure on Shisler on the restart, but was not able to
get outside of him to challenge for the lead, as Shisler took his second win of the
season. Boettcher was second, followed by Dan Linnehan, Randy Steinhoff and points-leader
Dan Gilster.
Mike Albrecht, Jr. was fast timer at 85.791 MPH, and Branden Berg came
home the winner in the B-Main. Heats went to Larry Bolster, Jr. Tom Thill and Mike
Campbell, and the dash checkers went to Rick Steinhoff and Lucas Korish.
Shane Ulvestad took advantage of a bump between leader Craig Chandler to take the lead of
the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, then held off Danielle Neary for the win.
Chandler led the first seven laps of the UAS Thunderstox feature, but
contact with Dwayne Anderson on lap eight forced him high, and allowed Shane Ulvestad to
slip underneath to take the lead. Danielle Neary and Jamie Dummer also slid by Anderson
and Chandler, and battled for second the rest of the way, allowing Ulvestad to take the
win.
Neary was second at the finish, followed by Dummer, Adam Moore and Chandler.
Jerry Aylesworth took the B-Feature, Neary won the dash, and heat wins
went to Anderson, John Hendrickson, Andy Barney and Chandler.
The Hornets were back in action on Saturday night, and features went to
Gary Towner, Heath Wissenberger and Shane Funnerud. Finnerud and Wissenberger also took
heat wins, along with John Eron.
