Herbst outlasts Nuttleman and Bagstad in exciting La Crosse show!
By David Morgan

August 9, 2003;  West Salem, WI - In one of the most exciting races of the season at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, J. Herbst, Tony Bagstad and Kevin Nuttleman battled back and forth down the stretch of the Trane Federal Credit Union 25, but in the end Herbst was able to hold off both drivers to take his third feature win of the season.

Wayne Smith (#3) was victorious in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature.

Points leader Steve Holzhausen and second-place Brad Powell made contact mid race on the backstretch, sending Powell sliding through the grass and up on the track in turn three. Both cars went to the rear of the field, and although Holzhausen recovered to finish tenth, Bagstad closed to with 16 points of the leader. Powell dropped from second to fourth in points, with four races remaining in the season.

On the opening lap of the race, Tim Nelson slid down into the grass in turn three, and saved the car, but as he came up onto the track, the rest of the field checked up, and Mike Belling, Bill Niles, Tom McClintock, Dexter Bean and Jeff Krueger ended up in the turn three wall. Niles' troubles continued, as one lap into the restarted race, he spun in turn one, slamming the wall hard. After the early cautions, Tony Bagstad and Kevin nuttleman opened up a lead on the field, with Brad Powell and Steve Holzhausen moving quickly to third and fourth.

On lap six, Nuttleman pulled alongside Bagstad in turn one, but slid up the track and had to wait until turn three to make his move. Again he pulled alongside, and briefly held the lead at the end of the lap, but the two cars touched going into one, and Nuttleman slid high, allowing Bagstad to retake the lead.

Bagstad opened up a three-car advantage on Nuttleman, while Powell and Holzhausen began to reign in the leaders. By lap 12, Nuttleman closed the advantage, while Holzhausen moved to the outside of Powell. The two cars touched, and Powell went sliding through the grass, coming to a rest just against the wall in turn three, bringing out the caution. Both Powell and Holzhausen were sent to the rear of the field on the restart.

Nuttleman made his move quickly, two laps after the restart, as he pulled alongside Bagstad on the outside. Bagstad slid up to make the block, and Nuttleman ducked inside, but once again he could not make the pass.

A lap later, as Nuttleman worked the high side of Bagstad again, J. Herbst came up, and slid inside Nuttleman, and on lap 16, he took over the second spot.On lap 19, Herbst went to the outside, and pulled into the lead on the frontstretch, with Nuttleman lining up to follow him.

The top three put on a show the rest of the way, as they battled for position, but Herbst was able to keep his hold on the top spot, while Nuttleman finally got by Bagstad for second on the final lap.

Bill Niles held off a late charge by Mike Belling to win the B-main in the division. Charlie Menard earned fast time with the final qualifying lap of the evening, averaging 96.705 MPH around the .545-mile oval. Heat winners were Jeff Krueger and Jim Hagel. Bud Dash wins went to Brad Powell and Rick Wateski.

It's natural for the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman drivers to emulate the late models, but they took it to extremes on Saturday night. After the late model's 5-car accident on lap one, the Sportsman drivers did them several better, as they had an 11-car pileup in turn three.

On the restart, fast timer Jeff Baker outgunned Tony Ciano, and pulled away from the field. By midrace, Baker was a half-straightaway in front of second place Rick Steinhoff, and another half straightaway separated Steinhoff from the battle for third between Ciano and Dan Gilster.

The race stayed green the rest of the way, and Baker took his third feature win of the season, with Steinhoff second, and points leader Dan Gilster finishing third.

Dan Erdman and Rob Curran took non qualifying heats, Larry Bolster, Jr. and Todd Lockington won the qualifying heats, and Bud Dash wins went to Randy Steinhoff and Dan Linnehan. Jeff Baker was fast timer with a speed of 86.066 MPH. David Steensen won the C-Feature, while the B-Feature went to Branden Berg.

Tony Leis liked the outside line in the United Supply Thunderstox feature, but it bit him not once but twice, as he was running three and four wide, and twice he slammed hard into the outside retaining wall. Wayne Smith led for most of the way, and benefitted from the third caution as Shane Ulvestad was making a hard charge for the lead. On the restart, Smith opened up a quick lead, but Ulvestad closed again, and pulled alongside him on lap 13. Ulvestad edged into the lead at the white flag, but Smith battled back, holding the inside line. The two cars battled side by side for the final lap, with Smith edging his way into the lead at the checkered.

Jason Bolster advanced to the feature by taking the B-Main, Shane Ulvestad took the Bud Dash, and heats went to Adam Moore, Dean Ashbahcer, Scott Voss and Mary Schill.
