Menard takes fourth La
Crosse win, climbs to second in points!
By David Morgan |
August
16, 2003; West Salem, WI - Steve Holzhausen has led
the points race at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway since week two, but as he has
slipped up a bit over the last four weeks, the race has tightened. Charlie Menard is now
the man on the move, with two wins in the last three races, and four for the season, as he
took over second in points, setting up a race to the finish over the final three races.
Todd Korish got a huge jump at the start of the Kwik Trip/Special Olympics
feature, and led the outside row to the front of the field, as Mark Lamoreaux, Brad Powell
and Charlie Menard followed by pole sitter Troy Goodenough. The caution flew on lap three,
as Jeff Krueger spun in a pack of car in turn three, and came to rest on the infield in
turn four.
Lamoreaux took to the outside on the restart, and moved by Korish on lap
five, taking the lead briefly, before Korish battled back on the inside.
Menard and Nuttleman came up behind the 26 of Lamoreaux a lap later, and
used the draft to push him into the lead. The leapfrogging at the front continued, as on
lap eight, Menard went to the outside, and took the top spot, with Nuttleman following
into second a lap later. Menard changed the tactic, as he opened up a lead as Nuttleman
battled Lamoreaux for a lap, and the front three stretched out as Nuttleman began to try
to track down the three-time winner.
Nuttleman closed to within a car length, but could get no closer, as
Menard took his fourth feature of the season, tying him with points leader Steve
Holzhausen for total feature wins. Holzhausen made a late charge to finish fourth, as
Menard's win tightened the points race. Holzhausen's lead is still 16 points, but Menard
is now in second, while Tony Bagstad slipped to third, 30 points behind the leader. Brad
Powell is fourth, 33 points back, and defending track champion Kevin Nuttleman is hanging
in there, 44 points out of first.
Menard was also fast timer, turning in a 96.762 mph lap. Adam Degenhardt
was the B-Main victor, and heat wins went to Ken Hutchens and Jon Inglett. Greg Scheck
took one of the Bud Dash wins, while the second one went to Todd Korish.
Larry Bolster, Jr. and Trent Boettcher jumped to the lead in the Sportsman
feature, as the field stretched out early. Boettcher ducked under Bolster for the lead on
lap 3, as Bolster started to slide back through the field. Bolster and Chand Wehling
battled for third for six laps, bottling up the rest of the field behind them, as
Boettcher and Scott Beckler opened up a ten-car advantage on the field. Boettcher cruised
to the win, with Beckler second, Bolster third, and Jeff Baker and Dan Gilster rounding
out the top five.
Troy Anderson won the B-Main, Dan Erdman took the C-Main. Tom Thill was
fast timer at 85.318 mph, and Bolster, Jr. and Dan Linnehan took the Bud Dashes. Heat wins
went to Mark Challet, Rick Shisler and Ron Lockington.
Charlie Vian had the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature well in hand,
as he built up a quarter-lap lead by lap six, and was cruising, that is until he stumbled
on a nine-car accident in turn two, and ended up right in the middle of it. Lance Lee took
charge on the restart, again taking a big lead, and cruising to the win. Matt Inglett
finished second, followed by Andy Barney, Jake Arneson and Dean Ashbacher.
Ron Heller won the B-Main, with Matt Inglett taking the Bud Dash. Heat
winners were Charles Vian, Brad Warthan, Jake Arneson and Lance Lee.
Brenda Bauer jumped out to the lead after an early incident, and pulled
away to the first Hornets feature win over Heath Weissenberger and Cory Klink.
Nicki Hagen did Bauer one better, as she not only pulled away from the
field, but began to lap cars just six laps into the second feature. Jim and Rick
Schermerhorn started closing the gap on the leaders, as al three cars had to deal with
lapped traffic. The Schermerhorns closed down, but not enough, as Hagen was able to take
the lead with a lapped car still between her and second-place Jim Schermerhorn.
In the third feature, the pressure was on the only female in the field,
Wendy Liebsch to continue the streak, but she appeared to have a tire going down, and
wasn't a factor as Andy Moore took the lead, and led for the first half of the race,
before Troy Opsahl came up to challenge him. The two raced side by side for a lap and a
half, but Opsahl took the lead, with Pete Arentz moving by a lap later. Arentz was able to
take the lead from Opsahl with just over a lap to go, and came home the winner, with
Opsahl second, and Moore third.
Heat winners were Steve Scholze, Kevin Turner, Jerry Schomers and Gary
Towner.
