take fourth La Crosse win!
By David Morgan |
August
23, 2003; West Salem, WI - J. Herbst earned his fourth
feature win of the season, battling not once, but twice with Todd Korish before taking the
lead, then holding off points-leader Steve Holzhausen to take the win. Holzhausen
soidified his hold on the top spot with the second-place finish, as he extended his lead
from 15 to 36 points over Charlie Menard.

feature race and extended his point lead.

Trent Tenner (#4) won his heat race and the feature in the United Auto Supply
Thunderstox division. |

Korish outgunned Tony Bagstad at the start, taking Rick Wateski and Herbst
by into second and third. On lap four, Herbst went to the outside, getting by Wateski, and
continued his move, pulling up alongside Korish. Korish was able to hold him off, and
Wateski retook second on lap seven, as Herbst began to fade a bit on the high line.
After dealing with the challenge, Korish opened up a four-car advantage by lap ten, and
again, Herbst made his way around Wateski, and started trying to close the gap on the
leader. Behind them, points leader Steve Holzhausen charged into the top five, catching
Wateski by lap 12. One lap later, he went around Wateski, but lost the pass when Jim
Hagel spun in turn two, bringing out the yellow.
Holzhausen was quick to the outside of Wateski on the restart, taking
third on lap 15, as Herbst dogged Korish at the front. On lap 17, Herbst went to the
houtside again, looking for the lead, and Holzhausen slipped under him, as Korish
maintained his hold on the top spot. Herbst made a move again on lap 18, pulling alongside
Korish, and taking the lead at the start-finish line. Korish battled back, pulling
alongside on the backstretch, as the two cars battled.
On lap 21, Korish finally pulled in behind Herbst, and Holzhausen went to
the outside, looking for a way to the front. He got by Korish on lap 24, but by that time,
Herbst had opened up a five-car advantage as he took the win.
Holzhausen was second, followed by Korish, Wateski, Andy Burgess and Kevin
Nuttleman. Blake Horstman, Brad Powell, Charlie Menard and Bagstad rounded out the top
ten.
Heat wins went to Greg Scheck and Bill Niles, the Bud Dashes to Korish and
Nuttleman, and Dan Steele won the B-main. Blake Horstman was fast timer at 20.134 seconds.
Dan Gilster had a rough start to his night, but a good finish. He
qualified well off of his normal time, and scorched a cylinder in doing so. He spent most
of the night working on the car, came out for the Bud Dash and took a win, then followed
it up with a win in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature.
Dan outgunned his brother Jimmy at the start, and survived a caution as he
took his second feature win, solidifying his points lead in the division. Jimmy Gilster
held on to second, with Chand Wehling, Rick Steinhoff and Mike Albrecht, Jr rounding out
the top five.
Jeff Baker was fast timer, at 22.790 seconds, while heat wins went to
Jordan Hess, Jake Arneson and Larry Bolster, Jr. Dan Linnehan and Dan Gilster took the Bud
dash wins. Jamie Millis advanced to the feature by taking the B-main.
Danny Fradette and Jerry Aylesworth battled at the front of the United
Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, until lap three, when Aylesworth slipped high, and off
the track in turn two. The field stayed tightly bunched, and on lap eight, when Fradette
slipped high coming out of turn four, Trent Tenner took the lead, with 18 moving to
second.
A lap latter, Fradette slid high in three, and spun in front of the field
in turn four, bringing out the second yellow, as he got knocked around like a pinball in
the turn.
On the restart, Tenner jumped to the lead, and held on, as Tim Steinhoff
charged up to take second, though he was never able to make a move on Tenner. Steinhoff
took second, followed by Greg Lindvig, Jerry Aylesworth and Kevin Burr.
Heat winners were Tenner, Aylesworth, Robert Stanfield and Adam Moore, Ben
Allen took the B-Main and Jason Bolster won the Dash. Late model driver Steve Holzhausen
made a late charge to the front in the School Bus Race, but came up short as Matt Inglett
won, lapping all but one bus in the field.
