Herbst Wins and Holzhausen
Conquers!
By David Morgan |
September
6, 2003; West Salem, WI - The September heat didn't
seem to bother Steve Holzhausen, as he charged to his first Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model
Championship on Ashley Furniture Night at the Races.
The 25 lap feature began with Rookie of the Year Adam Degenhardt on the
pole, and he led through the halfway lap. Lap 6 involved a four car melee in turn
four with the cars of Todd Oliver, Dexter Bean, Rick Wateski, and John Towner. All
were able to continue the final feature event of the 2003 season.
Shortly after the restart, Todd Korish passed Jim Hagel for 2nd with eighteen laps to go.
Meanwhile, point leaders Holzhausen and his closest challenger, Charlie Menard were
running outside the top ten. Shortly after the halfway lap, Todd Korish dove
underneath Degenhardt to take the lead, while J. Herbst quickly gained on the two leaders.
As Korish took the lead, Herbst - who started eleventh in the feature - fought off
a hot battle with eight other cars for second. With six laps to go, the hard
charging Herbst dove under Korish for the lead, while Menard had muscled his Chevrolet
from 11th to third in 10 laps. Menard gave it all he had to grab one last checkered
flag, as he took the high lane around Herbst on the last lap. Coming out of turn four and
down the frontstretch, Menard spun his car, while stopping short of the finish line.
Herbst took the checkered flag over Korish, Champion Holzhausen, Kevin Nuttleman
and Tony Bagstad.
It was J. Herbst's 4th win of the season, as he tied Menard and Holzhausen for the most
feature victories. Holzhausen took his Ford to an amazing 13 top fives in 19 races.
That was the consistency he needed to claim the top prize. "I have
great sponsors this year, and my biggest supporter doesn't even have her name on the car.
Jacklyn Daniels helped me put this program together; I have to thank her for
her support," Holzhausen told the estimated crowd of 3600. The crowd gave him a
standing ovation for his achievement...the 2003 Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model Champion.
Action continues next week with the 11th Annual Eve of Destruction, featuring the Green
Mamba Jet Car, School Bus Race, Trailer Race of Destruction, Roll Over Contest, Hornets,
and Thunderstox. The 2003 Season concludes with the Midwest's oldest and most
