Holzhauzen started behind Horstman, and quickly began looking for a way
around the fellow Bangor, WI driver. The top two cars, along with third-place J. Herbst
began pulling away from the field, as the cars further back started to sort themselves
out.
Holzhausen went to work on Horstman in earnest on lap five, trying for two
laps to get by on the inside, before moving to the outside at the start finish line at the
start of lap seven, and taking over the top spot on the backstretch.
Brad Powell and Menard were the first two cars to extricate themselves
from the group behind the leaders, and Menard moved around Powell on lap six, as the two
cars chased down the lead trio. Menard continued his charge as he ducked under Herbst on
lap eight and began closing on second-place Horstman.
Holzhausen opened up a 3-car advantage at the front, as Horstman tried to
hold off the charging Menard. Menard moved to the outside of Horstman on lap 13, and took
over the runner-up spot a lap later.
Two late cautions gave Menard a chance to close the gap on Holzhausen, but
each time the veteran Bangor driver was able to open up a two-car advantage, as he took
the checkered.
Menard finished second, followed by Tony Bagstad, Hostman and Kevin
Nuttleman, who edged by Powell at the finish. Powell took sixth, followed by Mike Belling,
Herbst, Mark Lamoreaux, and Jim Hagel.
Jon Barrette took the B-Main win, with Jeff Kruger right behind him.
Menard was fast timer at 98.023 MPH, while heat wins went to Brent Kirchner and Bill
Niles, and Bud Dashes to Belling and Todd Korish.
Jimmy Gilster jumped to the lead on lap two and survived two cautions, but
could not hold off Larry Bolster, Jr., who ducked under Gilster on the white flag lap, and
took the lead on the final lap to take the win in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National
Sportsman division feature.
Dan Gilster and Jeff Baker both used the double-wide restarts to improve
their positions on the outside, but neither of them could stay with Jimmy Gilster at the
front of the field. Bolster, however chose the inside line on each restart, and worked his
way under Jimmy Gilster with just over a lap to go to take the win. Jimmy Gilster finished
second, followed by Dan Gilster, Sam Andersen and Trent Boettcher.
Tony Ciano was fast qualifier, averaging 86.889 MPH on his qualifying run,
while Aaron Hass took the B-Main win. Heat winners were Rick Steinhoff, Scott Stingl and
Bill Miller, while Mike Albrecht, Jr. and Chris Skrede took the Bud Dash wins.
Matt Inglett made up three positions in the last two laps of the United
Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, and came home the winner when first-place finisher Trent
Tenner was disqualified after post-race inspection.
Travis Schendel barely held the lead for the first three laps of the
feature, but then began to open a gap at the front, as Tenner and Jamie Dummer battled
behind him. Tenner won that battle by lap five, and the top four cars started to pull away
from the field, with Ed Senn settling solidly into fourth.
The caution flew on lap 11, as Jason Bolster came to a stop along the wall
on the backstretch, tightening the field for the finish. Dummer spun in turn two on the
restart, and collected three other cars as the yellow flew quickly once more.
Schendel held the point on the restart, with Tenner staying right on his bumper as the
lead two pulled away from the field. With a lap and a half remaining, the two cars bumped
on the backstretch, and Schendel appeared to let off the gas and duck to the inside, as
Tenner drove by on the outside for the lead.
Ron Heller took second, followed by Schendel, Lester Stanfield and and
Brad Warthan. Al Bartels advanced to the feature by taking the B-Main win, and Andy Moore
took the Bud Dash win. Heat winners were Lester Stanfield, Craig Chandler, Tuxedo Tony
Leis and Chris Johnson, while Leis also took the Outhouse Race novelty event.
