Holzhausen solidifies points lead with second La Crosse win!
By David Morgan

May 31, 2003;  West Salem, WI -   The question posed to Bangor race driver Steve Holzhausen more often than not this season has been "Are you going to race full time, and run for points?" After several seasons of racing part time, or simply taking a week or two off, the question was a natural for a driver with experience not only on the local scene, but with the Central Wisconsin Racing Association, the ARTGO Challenge Series, ASA and the All Pro Series. He may well have given his answer on the track on Saturday night.

Tim Steinhoff (#20) overcame a late race caution flag to capture the United Auto Supply Thunderstox main event.

He started on the inside of the second row of the La Crosse Tribune 25 feature, and slipped under early leader Gib Scharpf one lap after an early caution, as he became the first driver to win a second feature this season in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.

Scharpf took the early lead, and led the first six laps, holding Holzhausen off as the veteran tried both the inside and outside groove. On lap seven, a three-lap third-place battle between Mark Lamoreaux and Mike Belling ended, as the two cars tangled heading into turn one, and both slid hard into the wall between turns one and two. On the restart, Scharpf first opened up a lead, but heading into turn three, Holzhausen slipped just inside the 63 car, and took over the top spot as the cars passed the start finish line.

Scharpf's night ended on lap 15, when something broke on his machine on the backstretch, sending him spinning into the infield, and just catching rookie Adam Degenhardt as he tried to avoid the spinning machine. Rick Wateski moved into second with Scharpf's misfortune, and he had a mirrorful of J. Herbst on the restart. As the two cars battled for second, Holzhausen opened up his lead once more, and pulled out to an easy win.

Herbst finished second, followed by Wateski, Brad Powell, Kevin Nuttleman and Blake Horstman. Charlie Menard, Tony Bagstad, Todd Korish and Brent Kirchner rounded out the top ten.

Jeff Krueger and David Tradup touched coming out of turn four early in the B-Main, setting off a 5-car accident that saw Jim Hagel's car go up and over the 36 of Troy Goodenough. Tim Nelson made it thru the melee, and came away with the win, while Curt Eckleberg took second.

Brad Powell was fast timer, averaging 96.939 MPH, and the qualifying heat went to Andy Niles. Steve Holzhausen and Mark Lamoreaux won the Bud Dashes.

Rick Steinhoff sent a shower of sparks up along the backstretch wall on lap two of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature, as he lost a tire in contact on the backstretch, and slid to a stop in turn four, bringing out a quick yellow.

Jimmy Gilster and Rob Mahan pulled away from the field, as cars battled for position behind them, as Gilster claimed his first feature win of the season, with Mahan right behind in second. Aaron Hass made a late move to take third, followed by Randy Steinhoff and Chand Wehling.

Tony Ciano and Ken Lewis won the B-main and C-main, , while Trent Boettcher was quick timer at 22.703 seconds. Non qualifying heat winners were Scott Stingl and Jake Arneson; Dan Linnehan and Branden Berg took qualifying heats, and Rick Steinhoff and Jimmy Gilster won the Bud Dashes.

The last thing Tim Steinhoff wanted to see in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature was a yellow flag. After all, he outgunned Lance Lee at the start, and pulled into a big lead over Bill Inglett, a lead he maintained two-thirds of the way through the feature. On lap 11, Tuxedo Tony Leis and Dean Ashbacher tangled coming out of turn four, and Ashbacher t-boned Leis as they crossed the start-finish line, bringing out the caution.

Inglett and Shane Ulvestad had designs on the lead on the restart, but Inglett ran into trouble on lap 12, and was spun in turn four, sending him into the infield, as Steinhoff cruised to the win. Ulvestad finished second, followed by Kevin Burr, Ron Heller and Greg Lindvig.

Jason Bolster won the B-Main, Greg Lindvig took the dash, and heats went to Ron Heller, Ryan Lockington, Tim Steinhoff and Shane Ulvestad.

Troy Opsahl started on the outside of the front row, and took control early in the first Hornets feature, and came away with the win over Jerry Lemke, who moved through the field to finish second. Pete Arentz, Jerrod Logging and Gary Towner rounded out the top five.

Jeff Rud threatened to run away with the second feature, pulling out to a 6-car advantage early, but Pat Burchell ran him down, pulling up behind him on lap eight, with Charlie Schwabenbauer right behind. Two laps later, both cars went to the inside, and Burchell and Schwabenbauer both went by Rud. On lap 11, Schwabenbauer went to the outside to get by Burchell, and take the lead, en route to his first win of the season. Burchell took second, followed by Ryan Lockington, Jeff Rud and Rick Schermerhorn.

Rich Fladhammer took a wild ride on the second lap of the third feature, as he went up on two wheels along the backstretch wall, then flipped his car over on the backstretch. Ron Amann went out to the early lead, but Shane Anderson took over 3 laps into the race, and pulled away to the win over a hard charging Mark Bornitz. Justin Yahnkee, Ron Amann and Carroll Hundorf rounded out the top five.

Heat winners were Ryan Happel, Jerrod Logging, Jeff Heaney and Rick Soland.
