12, 2004; West Salem, WI - The lightning flashing overhead
was symbollic for Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model Driver J. Herbst as his lightning fast car
made a pass with 14 laps to go, then held off a late surge by Charlie Menard to take his
first feature win of the season in the La Crosse Tribune 25 at the La Crosse Fairgrounds
Speedway Saturday night.
Herbst, who started in fourth, moved to the inside of Rick Wateski going
into turn three on lap 11, then led the next three laps before rain stopped the
race, causing a delay of 1:15 minutes while the officials dried the racing surface.
Polesitter Tom McClintock led the first four laps of the race, before Wateski
assumed the lead in turn three. Late Model point leader Menard appeared to
have the fastest car at the time of the caution, and was moving into a position to battle
for the lead as the caution flag came out. Menard started ninth, patiently worked
his way through traffic, and moved into third place just before the race was halted.
On the ensuing restart following the rain delay, a six car accident occurred in turn four
coming to the green flag. Involved in the accident were Bill Niles, McClintock, Mike
Belling, Shawn Pfaff, Ken Hutchens and Todd Korish. All but McClintock and Pfaff were able
to continue.
Menard was able to pass Wateski for second place, while Wateski held off Kevin Nuttleman
for third. Rookie Sam Andersen had a strong run, finishing in fifth place.
Andy Burgess continued his recent hot qualifying streak, posting his third fast time in
the past four weeks. Burgess' time of 20.184, 97.280 MPH, edged Steve Holzhausen by
just over a tenth of a second. Blake Horstman, Charlie Menard and Shawn Pfaff
rounded out the top five in qualifying.
Todd Korish claimed the B-Main checkers, while Bill Niles and John Towner took heat wins
for the division. Kevin Nuttleman and Mike Belling were the Bud Dash winners.
Outside polesitter Rick Shisler took the lead early in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman
Division feature race, then held off a strong late race charge by Larry Bolster, Jr. to
capture his first feature win of the year. Chris Skrede finished third, followed by
Jes Tenner and Jeff Baker.
Mike Albrecht recorded his third fast time of the year in the Sportsman Division. He
clocked in at 22.742 seconds, 83.338 MPH. Todd Lockington was the B-Main winner.
Jeff Winterfield won the Non-Qualifying heat race, Branden Berg and Nicholas Schroeder won
Qualifying races, while Chand Wehling and Randy Steinhoff were the Bud Dash winners.
Adam Moore took the win in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature. Travis
Schendel was second, followed by Steve Grandall, Lavern Berg and Danielle Neary.
Matt Inglett took the Thunderstox B-Main checkers. Kyle Voss, Steve Grandall, Adam
Moore and Travis Schendel took Thunderstox heat wins, while Berg won the Bud Dash.
In the Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornets Division, Kevin Turner, Alan Van Vleet and
Eric Komperud took feature wins. Ben Hehl, Turner, Komperud and Van Vleet won
Features heat races.
