10, 2004; West Salem, WI - Mark Lamoreaux enjoyed one his
best nights in recent memory Saturday night at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. After
missing a couple weeks earlier in the season with damage to his race car, Lamoreaux
returned to Victory Lane as he drove his car to victory in the Quillin's 25 Feature race
in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model Division.
Lamoreaux started on the pole, and looked like he was going to run away
from the field as he built a 20 car length lead early in the race. The cars trying to
chase down Lamoreaux were having a tough time, as it appeared the car of Dan Steele was
slowing holding the field up. However, once Kevin Nuttleman cleared Steele, he started
cutting into the lead of Lamoreaux. Season point leader Charlie Menard started in twelvth
position, and was
making steady progress towards the front until a caution brought out by Rick Wateski's
spin slowed the field on lap 21.
Nuttleman and Menard were quick on the restart, as they applied serious pressure to
Lamoreaux. Nuttleman tried various lines attempting to make a pass for the lead, but was
unable to find the right line, falling about a half car length short at the checkered
flag. Menard finished third, as he finished just behind Nuttleman in the closest finish of
the season. Sam Andersen and Andy Burgess rounded out the top five.
Menard was the fast qualifier for the evening, clocking in at 20.260 seconds, 96.915 MPH.
His time was identical to that of Steve Holzhausen, however Menard was awared the top spot
by virtue of his first lap time.
Todd Oliver claimed the B-Feature checkers, while Andy Niles and Lorin Kurth took heat
wins for the division. Rick Wateski and Lamoreaux were the Bud Dash race winners.
Scott Beckler started on the pole in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature, and that
was a good place to be, as three wrecks happened behind him which slowed the field and
caused damage to several race cars. Beckler was able to take the checkers in winning the
Quillin's 15 Feature. Series point leader Jeff Baker finished second, followed by Jimmy
Gilster, Rick Shisler and Daniel Linnehan.
Sportsman heat race wins went to Chand Wehling and Josh Millis, while Rick Steinhodd and
Trent Boettcher took Bud Dash wins. Joe Rinartz took the B-Feature checkers.
Laverne Berg led the entire way in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, taking the
checkers in the Quillin's 15. Berg started on the pole, and was never seriously challenged
for the win. Tony Wheeler finished second, followed up by Tim Steinhoff, Kevin Burr and
Greg Lindvig.
Bill Inglett won the B-Feature, Steinhoff took the Bud Dash, and heat wins went to Berg,
Wheeler, Lindvig and Danielle Neary.
