July
16, 2004; West Salem, WI - Rick Schermerhorn used his prerace strategy to perfection Friday night to win the
Childrens Miracle Network Big Cheese 200 Enduro. Schermerhorn practiced patience the
first half of the race, keeping his car clean, then got more aggressive as more cars fell
out of the race to pick up the checkered flag.
Schermerhorn raced in the top five for most of
the race, and was running second on lap 141, when leader Jeff Martin made contact with a
spinning car in turn two and was forced thru the infield, coming back onto the track in
turn three but amazingly only losing two positions in the process. Martin, who was
the halfway leader, alson found trouble on lap 151, when he made contact with the second
place car of Heath Weissenberger. Although dominating most of the first three
quarters of the race, Martin was forced to the pits with excessive damage on lap 185,
ending his hopes of winning.
The Big Cheese Enduro started with 77 cars, but only 47 were remaining at the halfway
break. The race was stopped by three red flags, on laps 2, 77 and 132.
Winning the award for the Beautiful Car Contest was Martin, while Josh Inglett took home
the award for Ugliest Car trophy. La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway regular Bill Niles,
who races in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division, teamed with U.S. Congressman to win
the halfway break Driver-Fan Egg Toss.
Weissenberger finished second, followed by Randy Lavigne, Robert Stanfield and Conrad
Rosendahl. Sixth place was Martin, seventh went to Jason Dummer, with Gary Phillips,
John Ratz and Pete Muenkel rounding out the top ten.
