July 17, 2004;  West Salem, WI - Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model driver Charlie Menard took another step towards winning the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway track championship after claiming victory in the Brickl Bros. 50 Feature race Saturday night. Menard started in ninth place, and worked his way patiently through the field, finally taking the lead for good on lap 18. The victory was Menard's fourth feature win of the season, and extended his lead in the season standings.

Steve Holzhausen also had a very strong car, and appeared to be the only person capable of running with Menard. Holzhausen made several attempts to pass Menard, coming close on several restarts. On lap 23, Brad Powell made contact with Mike Belling, bringing out the first caution of the race. On lap 26, a three car accident slowed the field again, and on lap 42, a two car accident in turn two involving Blake Horstman and Rick Wateski brought out the final yellow. Horstman was able to continue, while Wateski suffered extensive damage to his car and was finished for the night. On each of the restarts, Holzhausen made an attempt to pass Menard, but was unable to complete the pass to take the lead.

Holzhausen was able to bring his car home in second place, about five car lengths behind Menard. Menard's teammate Andy Burgess was third, Kevin Nuttleman fourth and Brad Powell fifth. The fifth place finish capped an good night for Powell, a former La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway track champion who was making his first appearance in La Crosse this season. Powell qualified his car in third, but was later disqualified due to low car height. As a result, Powell had to race his way into the feature through a qualifying race, which he went on to win.

Holzhausen posted his first fast time of the season, with a lap of 20.099 seconds, 97.691 MPH. Winning qualifying races were Powell and Andy Burgess, while Tom McClintock and Jim Hagel were the Bud Dash winners. Tim Hagen took the checkers in the B-Feature.

Chand Wehling took the win in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportmans division Brickl Bros. 15 feature. Wehling was able to hold off a late charge from Rick Steinhoff to take his second feature win of the season. The race was slowed by four cautions. On the last restart with five laps to go, Steinhoff moved his car to the inside, hoping to get a jump on Wehling, but was unable to complete the pass, as Wehling held off Steinhoff by a single car length.

Sportsman qualifying race winners were John Olson and Branden Berg. Nick Schroeder and Lucas Korish won the Bud Dash races. Rob Curran took the B-Feature checkered flag. Chris Skrede posted his second consecutive and third overall fast time of the season, posting a lap of 22.694 seconds, 86.521 MPH.

Jason Starks picked up his first feature win in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox division, taking the checkers in the Brickl Bros. 15 feature. Starks started on the pole and led the entire distance in a closely contested race. Jason Schaller finished second, Danielle Neary third, with Bill Inglett and Steve Bornitz rounding out the top five.

The Thunderstox C-Feature went to Kyle Voss, Jason Bolster won the B-Feature, while Bill Inglett won the Bud Dash. Heat race winners were Jason Chandler, Starks, Joey Johnson and Jason Schaller.

Racing action resumes next Saturday night as four huge divisons take to the track to do battle. The Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models, Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman, United Auto Supply Thunderstox and Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornets will all be in action, starting at 6:30 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM, with qualifying starting at 5:05 PM.
