Menard Takes Feature Win, Track Championship in La Crosse!
By R.J. Herried

August 28, 2004;  West Salem, WI - Eau Claire, WI driver Charlie Menard won his season high fifth feature race of the season, and in doing so wrapped up the season points title in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model division Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. With a 62 point lead heading into the final race next weekend, Menard's lead is untouchable. Menard's fifth win of the season was most like his most gratifying, having won a feature filled with former La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway track champions in the most impressive lineup of the year. A season high 40 Late Model cars turned out to race on a perfect evening for racing.

Multi-time LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway NASCAR Late Model champion, Kevin Nuttleman raced a Team Menard Car for the first time since parting ways with the Wehrs team this week.

Menard started the Five Star Telecom 25 Feature race in fifth place and had to patiently work his way to front, finally passing Menards teammate Andy Burgess on lap 18 to take the lead for good. Menard was able to take full advantage of two caution flags that slowed the field, allowing him to close in on the leaders under the yellow flag.

Mike Belling started the from the pole, but the lead was short lived as he was hit from behind by Brad Powell on lap 6, causing him to spin out and collecting four other cars in the melee. Mark Lamoreaux, Todd Oliver, Kevin Nuttleman and Adam Degenhardt were all involved in the incident, forcing them all to start at the rear of the field on the restart. Lorin Kurth brought out the first caution, with a solo spin between turns one and two.

Burgess was able to hold on for second place, followed by Steve Holzhausen, Paul Proksch and rookie Sam Andersen. Proksch actually had the evenings most impressive drive, starting at the rear of the 25 car field, and working his way to finish fourth, in his first race of the season.

Quinn Arnoldy captured his first feature win, taking the B-Feature checkered flag. Taking Kwik Trip Late Model heat race wins were J.J. meyer and Todd Korish, while Jim Hagel and Todd Oliver took the Bud Dash wins in the division. Burgess posted the evenings fast qualifying time, with a lap of 20.128 seconds, 97.551 MPH.

Larry Bolster, Jr. captured his third feature win of the season in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman Division. Bolster, Jr. started on the pole and was able to lead every lap in a very hotly contested race, filled with very close racing and one big wreck. Tom Thill and Chand Wehling made contact coming out of turn four to take both out of competition. Both cars made contact with the wall and suffered extensive damage, ending their evening. Once the race resumed, Bolster, Jr. was able to maintain a fairly comfortable lead the rest of the way. Jes Tenner finished second, with Jordan Hess, Rob Mahan and Jimmy Gilster rounding out the top five.

Daniel Linnehan continued to dominate Sportsman qualifying, taking the fast time for the sixth consecutive week with a lap of 22.694 seconds, 86.521 MPH. Ken Lewis captured the B-Feature checkers, while Marv DeGarmo and Joe Rinartz took heat wins. Bud Dash wins went to Aaron Hass and Bolster, Jr.

Jason Chandler was first across the line in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature to take his first win of the season. Chandler took full advantage of his pole starting position, to edge Lonnie Klonecki for the win. Mary Schill finished third, followed by Charles Vian and Jason Bolster. Matt Inglett took the Thunderstox B-Feature, with Vian taking the Bud Dash. Heat race wins in the division went to Klonecki, Bolster, Aaron Vinson and Ben Allen.

The regular season wraps up next Saturday evening, with racing to begin at 7:15 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM, with qualifying to start at 5:05 PM.
