Nine feature races and five big divisions took to the track to compete on the first of four huge days of racing. The annual Eve of Destruction sponsored by Coca-Cola certainly provided lots of fun for the roughly 7,000 attendees Saturday night at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Great racing and lots of novelty events hightlighted the evenings schedule. In action were the United Auto Supply Thunderstox as well as the Features Sports Bar and Grill Hornet division.

Baker, who drives in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman division, had a good lead coming into the last race of the season, and his fourth place finish in the Oktoberfest 20 Feature race cemented his second track championship overall. Baker also claimed a championship in 1996. Baker exercised good patience and judgement in avoiding a couple of on track incidents in which he was nearly involved. Chris Skrede started the evening with an outside chance to overtake Baker, however, his 15th place feature finish wasn't enough. Larry Bolster, Jr. finished second, Jimmy Gilster third, with Baker and Chand Wehling rounding out the top five.

Randy Hass captured the checkered flag in the Sportsman B Feature. Heat race winners in the division were Nick Clements and Jerimny Wagner. Dash wins went to Jordan Hess and John Olson. Dan Linnehan was fast timer for an amazing eight straight night, clocking in with a time of 22.653 seconds, 86.677 MPH.

Inglett claimed his first track championship by finishing sixth in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox Oktoberfest 20 Feature. Inglett started the evening needing to finish nine positions better than his nearest competitor Jason Bolster. Bolster appeared to be closing the gap, leading Inglett by about seven places when an accident on the backstretch took out seveal competitors, allowing Inglett to gain back several positions. Once the race resumed, Inglett was able to follow Bolster to the checkers to claim the championship. Inglett showed his joy be attempting several doughnuts on the frontstretch to the delight of the thousands in attendance.

Mark Challet took the win in the Oktoberfest 20 Thunderstox Feature. Challet started on the pole, and was able to maintain that position throughout the race to pick up the win. Travis Schendel finished second, followed by Josh Inglett, Al Bartels and Bolster. Andy Moore took the Thunderstox B Feature, Jason Schaller the C Feature. Thunderstox heat race wins went to Adam Moore, Bolster, Jamie Dummer and Denise Miller.

Larry Bolster, Jr. picked up the checkered flag in the R.A.Y.S. (Run All Your Stuff) division. The division features cars that are able to be modified without many regulations. Tony Leis picked up the heat race win in the division.

Litchfield, MN Modified driver Steve Johanneck showed he was clearly the class of the field, winning both the heat race and the Oktoberfest 20 Feature. Johanneck took the lead following a late race caution, and held on to the finish, edging Jim Kulseth for the victory.

Ninety-five cars began the Budweiser Enduro 75 Feature, but not nearly that many finished. The Enduro races are highlighted by lots of cars in a small amount of space, with no caution flags. As cars fall out of the race, a jam truck pushes them out of the way as the race continues. Tomah, WI driver Dan Rozek came out victorious at the end of the wild race, which featured a couple cars upside down and many crashes.

Exciting racing action continues through the weekend. The weekend is highlighted by the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Midwest Series, which runs a 250 lap event Sunday afternoon.
