Burgess Takes Second Straight LaCrosse Feature Win! By R.J. Herried

May 8, 2004;  West Salem, WI -  A cool, rainy day threatened to wreak havoc with the evening racing program at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Afternoon sprinkles cleared allowing for an action packed evening of racing in four great divisions.

In the Kwik Trip Late Model feature sponsored by Majestic Pines Casino, Andy Burgess passed Mark Lamoreaux on lap 18 and was able to hold off the field to take his second consecutive win. Burgess pressured Lamoreaux for several laps, finally getting along side of him getting into turn three.

Outside pole sitter Todd Oliver led the early laps, before Lamoreaux assumed the lead on lap twelve passing Oliver on the outside coming down the frontstretch. Lamoreaux was able to maintain the lead until Burgess made the eventual winning pass. Lamoreaux was able to hold on for second place. Third was Rick Wateski, with J. Herbst and Blake Horstman finishing out the top five positions.

The race was slowed by two caution flags on laps seven and fourteen. The first was caused by Shawn Pfaff spinning down the backstretch grass. The second caution was brought out when Quinn Arnoldy and Shawn Lockington spun between turns three and four. All involved drivers were uninjured and able to continue in the race.

Late Model track record holder Blake Horstman topped the field in qualifying for the second time this season, leading the field with a lap of 97.989 MPH. Following Horstman were Andy Burgess and J. Herbst. Mark Lamoreaux and Kevin Nuttleman rounded out the top five. Series point leader Charlie Menard had qualified in third position, but was disqualified after failing post qualifying inspection. Menard was able to qualify for the feature race after winning one of the preliminary qualifying heats. Also winning a qualifying heat race was Mike Belling, while Jim Hagel and Steve Holzhausen were the Bud Dash winners.

The Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman division feature race was won by Larry Bolster, Jr. Starting from the third spot, Bolster, Jr. took the lead early on in the race, passing polesitter Scott Beckler just three laps in. Bolster, Jr. was able to hold off serious challenges from both Jes Tenner and Mike Albrecht, who finished in second and third place. Beckler was able to drive home in fourth, followed by John Olson.

In Sportsman heat race action, Nick Clements won the non-qualifying race, while Lucas Korish and Nicholas Schroeder were the qualifying heat winners. Larry Bolster, Jr. and Tom Thill were the Bud Dash winners. Rick Steinhoff was the fast qualifier in the Sportsman Division, turning a lap of 86.865 MPH.

In the action packed United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, Mary Schill came home first to take the checkered flag. Schill started on the outside poll and quickly assumed the lead. The win capped an impressive evening for Schill, as she earlier won her qualifying heat race. In addition to Schill, also winning Thunderstox heat races were Jason Bolster, Dwayne Anderson, Lavern Berg and Mary Schill.

In the first Queen Bee novelty race of the season, Rosie Zakem passed Manda Lindvig with two laps left to take the checkered flag. Lindvig took second, followed by Ruth Inglett, Kim Eckelberg and Lindy Berg.
