LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway Race Report

Burgess takes clean sweep, third win at La Crosse!
By David Morgan

June 11, 2005;  West Salem, WI -  Andy Burgess may be chasing Kevin Nuttleman in the NASCAR Kwik Trip Late Model division at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, but after his clean sweep of qualifying, the Bud Dash and the feature race, he is certainly turning up the heat on the eight-time track champ. Burgess was quickest from start to finish, qualifying at 97.760 MPH, moving from the back of the field to take the win in a wreck-plagued Bud Dash, and then moving to the front on lap  12 in the Midwest Fuels/Bob Johnson Lubricants 25 to become the first driver in five years to take a clean sweep at La Crosse. Steve Carlson last turned the trick in the 2000 season.

Steve Holzhausen was the first car to make a big move, starting on the inside of the second row, and quickly moving outside, and taking the lead on the opening lap. After a lap three caution, Tony Bagstad was able to set up shop inside of Holzhausen, and duck under hm for the lead coming out of turn four on the fifth circuit.

Bagstad led for seven laps, as Burgess made his way through the field, taking second on lap six, and moving by Bagstad on the outside on lap 12. Bagstad made one move for the lead with  six laps remaining, but couldn't make the pass, as Burgess came away with his third win in the last four races. Holzhausen got by Bagstad on the final lap to take second, with Bagstad, third, Nuttleman fourth, and Mark Lamoreaux fifth. Brent Kirchner was sixth, followed by Todd Korish, Mike Belling, Todd Oliver and Tim Nelson.

Jim Hagel took the B-Main, while the other Bud Dash win went to Todd Oliver and Kraig Burrows took the lone qualifying heat race win.
Dan Gilster took his third win of the season, solidifying his spot at the top of the standings as he guns for a third Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman championship. He also became the second driver in three weeks to claim fast time (87.974 MPH) and come away with the feature win on the same night.

He took the leed on lap five, after a very brief rain shower, when brother Jimmy Gilster and Branden Berg touched in turn one. Tom Thill took second, followed by Jimmy Gilster, Larry Bolster, Jr., and Berg.

Rob Mason came home the winner in the B-Feature, and Josh Millis and Larry Bolster, Jr. took qualifying heat wins, while Dan Erdmann won the non-qualifying heat.   Lucas Korish and Randy Steinhoff took the Bud Dash wins.
Craig Chandler led for most of the way in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but on lap 12, Jamie Dummer and  Steve Bornitz made a sandwich of him, going three-wide out of turn two for the lead. Dummer came away the big winner, taking the feature, while Bornitz and Chandler touched, spinning Bornitz around in turn two. Bornitz was able to keep the car going, avoiding the caution, but fell back in the field. Chandler finished second, followed by Wayne Smith, Ron Heller and Adam Moore.

Heats went to Craig Chander, Steve Bornitz, Brad Warthan and Jamie Dummer. Greg Lindvig won the B-Feature, while Jerry Aylesworth won the Bud Dash.

Mike Thompson moved to the front in the first feature, and survived a mid-race caution, once again pulling away from the field for the win. He was followed by Jason Mork, Jim schermerhorn, Joe Heaney and John Clements. A 4-car pileup early in the second feature bunched the field, as Bekah Voehl's car was rear-ended coming out of turn four, and ended up on top of another car. Shane Finnerud moved to the front, and held on through a late yellow for the checkered flag. Larry Burroughs was second, followed by Kevin Turner, Jeremy Arndt and Pete Muenkel. Derrick Hammer seemed to have the third feature well in hand, and survived  one caution, but on the restart after the second caution, Rick Schermerhorn moved by for the lead, and came away with the win.  Chris Johnson was second, followed by Hammer, Matt Moore, and Jerry Lemke.

Heat winners were Larry Burroughs, John Clements,  Pete Muenkel and Mike Carlson.
