June
25, 2005; West Salem, WI - There have been times over
the last few seasons that eight-time track champion Kevin Nuttleman has struggled trying
to find victory lane. His consistency has had him in the points battles every year, and
has him leading the way this season, but after breaking Dick Trickles record of 86
late model feature wins at La Crosse, the pace of those wins has slowed. That may have
changed on Saturday night.
A week of late nights at the shop, and extra time on the track in the high
temperatures yielded what may well be the best race car he has had under him in three
years. On Saturday night, he started seventh, dropped a spot early, then showed he was
able to go inside and outside to pass, as he claimed feature win number two on the season,
and number 93 in his late model career at La Crosse.
Weve been at the shop past midnight all this week,
Nuttleman said after the win. Weve put in a lot of work, and a day of
practicing helped us get the car ready for this heat.
His second win of the season helped him extend his points lead over Andy
Burgess, who has three feature wins on the season, to 27 points. Despite the well-handling
car, Nuttleman was hesitant to say it was the best he has had in years. Lets
just say weve got a good car right now.
Sam Andersen and Todd Korish put on a good battle for the lead at the
start, with Andersen leading the first two laps, before Korish edged to the front on the
outside, and finally was able to pull down in front of Anderson on lap five. A lap later
the only caution of the night flew, as three cars spun in between turns one and two, but
all were able to continue.
Mike Belling moved by Anderson on lap five, just before the yellow, and started working on
Korish at the drop of the green. Twice he tried to duck under Korish, to no avail, but on
lap nine he moved to the high line, and took over the lead on lap 12 as the cars came out
of turn three.
Belling opened up a lead on the field, as Andersen looked for a way around
Korish once more, and Nuttleman moved into the four on lap 12, ducking inside of Anderson
to take third two laps later. By that time, both Belling and Korish had 3-car advantages
over the next position, but Nuttleman closed on Korish, and the two stayed in line,
catching Belling by lap 15.
On lap 16, Nuttleman went outside to take second from Korish, then ducked
inside of Belling coming out of turn two a lap later to take the lead for good. Andersen
moved by both Korish and Belling in the final five laps to take second, with Belling,
Korish and a hard-charging Steve Carlson rounding out the top five. Burgess, who started
outside of Nuttleman in the fourth row, wound up sixth, followed by Steve Holzhausen, Mark
Lamoreaux, Dan Steele and Tony Bagstad.
Burgess was fast timer for the eighth time this season, at 98.540 MPH, and also took one
of the Bud Dash wins. Todd Oliver took the other Bud Dash, with Adam Degenhardt claming
the qualifying heat, and Troy Goodenough the B-Feature.
Twice this season Jimmy Gilster looked poised to take Ray Hutson Chevrolet
sportsman division feature wins with a fast car and a front-row starting position. Twice
he was unable to capitalize, once because he gave up his starting spot when his wife went
into labor. On Saturday night, he started in the second row, showed enough patience to let
the first-row drivers sort things out, and then went to the outside to pass Tom Thill on
lap six for the lead, and the win. Thill finished second, followed by Branden Berg. Chad
Rosendahl had his best-ever finish in fourth, and Dan Linnehan rounded out the top five.
Gilster prepared for the feature with a battle with Larry Bolster, Jr. in
the Even Dash, with Bolster taking the win by mere inches at the line. Trent Boettcher won
the Odd Bud Dash, and heat wins went to Josh Millis and Rob Mason. Mike Carlson won the
B-Feature, and Mike Albrecht, Jr. was fast time at 88.510 MPH.
Steve Owen failed on his first two attempts to get by United Auto Supply
Thunderstox feature leader Tony Wheeler, but once Owen moved to the lead, Charles Vian,
Jr. was right behind, and Vian, Jr. ducked inside of Owen in turn three of the final lap
to edge his way to the feature win. Vian, Jr.s win comes one week after his father
was in Victory Lane after the Thunderstox feature.
Owen finished second, followed by Wheeler, Joey Johnson and Corey Barney.
Andy Moore won the B-Feature, Craig Chandler took the C-Feature, and Greg Lindvig won the
Bud Dash. Heat wins went to Lonnie Klonecki, Kyle Voss, Owen, Mark Krueger and Vian, Jr.,
while Tony Leis won the Daredevil Challenge Roll Over Contest.
