July 3,
2005; West Salem, WI - After his Kwik Trip
NASCAR Late Model win last week, 8-time track champion Kevin Nuttleman downplayed his
chances at getting career victory number 100 this season, citing the tough competition at
La Crosse, and his need to be consistent to stay atop the points chase. He followed that
up by once again dicing that competition, moving by Mark Lamoreaux with three laps to go,
becoming the second driver to claim back-to-back feature wins this season.
Tim Nelson made a strong move for his first late model feature win in
several years, leading from the start, and pulling out to a three-car advantage before and
after an early caution for an Andy Niles spin on the frontstretch. He maintained the lead
into a lap 12 caution, caused by J. Herbst colliding with the turn four wall, but after
the restart, his luck ran out. Mark Lamoreaux made it by second-place Tom McClintock on
the restart, and moved by Nelson for the lead two laps later, making the pass on the
outside in turn three.
Nuttleman and Burgess were making their way through the field, with
Nuttleman making a nifty outside-inside move to get by two cars on the same lap just
before the lap 12 caution. Nuttleman moved to second behind Lamoreaux on lap 15, but had a
5-car disadvantage to make up. Burgess followed into third a lap later, but found himself
4-lengths behind Nuttleman in the chase to the front.
Nuttleman closed the gap on Lamoreaux, reaching his back bumper on lap 19,
looking for a way around. As Nuttleman worked the leader, Burgess closed on the lead pair,
before Nuttleman set up on the outside, and took the top spot on lap 23, as the cars
entered turn three. Burgess tried twice to get by Lamoreaux for second, but Lamoreaux was
able to hold him off by a quarter panel at the finish for the runner-up spot.
Burgess was third, followed by Mike Belling, Steve Holzhausen and Nelson.
Tom McClintock, Todd Korish, Steve Carlson and Sam Andersen rounded out the top ten.
Burgess continued his assault on the track qualifying records, taking his
eighth overall quick time, and sixth in a row. He averaged 98.273 MPH. Adam Degenhardt won
the qualifying heat, while Todd Oliver and Chris Skrede won the Bud Dashes, and rookie
Nick Schroeder won the B-Main.
Trent Boettcher outgunned rookie Emily Sue Steck at the start of the Ray
Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature, then pulled away as the rookie driver
tried to hold off the rest of the field. Steck held on until lap 12, when Dan Linnehan
moved by on the outside to claim second, with Aaron hass also getting by before the finish
to finish third. Steck was fourth, followed by Mike Albrecht, Jr. Nick Clements came home
the victor in the B-Feature.
Jes Tenner claimed his fifth quick time of the season, averaging 89.023
MPH for his run around the 5/8-mile oval. Josh Millis and Larry Bolster, Jr. won
qualifying heats, while Tom Thill and Lucas Korish won the twin Bud Dashes.
Jeff Rentz jumped to the lead of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox
feature quickly, as the field went 3-wide behind him on the opening lap as cars went for
the front. Mary Schill was the big winner in that battle, as she moved up to third, and
followed Lonnie Klonecki by the race leader on lap seven. On lap 10, adam Moore hit the
turn three wall hard, and although he tried to drive away from the incident, his car came
to a stop on the frontstretch two laps later, bringing out the caution, and setting up a
sprint to the finish. Klonecki pulled away on the restart for the win, with Schill second,
and Denise Miller, Mark Krueger and Ed Senn rounding out the top five.
Ray Burkum had a first in the final heat race, as he hit the tire at the
beginning of the backstretch wall, and immediately flipped over on his roof. Andy Moore
won that heat, while other heat winners were Dan Erdmann, Lonnie Klonecki, Ed Senn and
Jeff Rentz. Jason Bolster claimed the B-feature win to advance to the feature, while Corey
Barney held off Charles Vian, Jr for the C-Feature. Mary Schill won the Bud Dash.
This Saturday night Quillins helps kick off the second half of the
race season, with the points battles heating up for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models, Ray
Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman and the United Auto Supply Thunderstox drivers. Qualifying
kicks off at 5:05 p.m. with the first race at 7:15. It will be the final tuneup for the
Fairtime 50-lap late model feature on July 16.
