LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway Race Report

Carlson takes wild ride, impacts La Crosse points race!
By David Morgan

July 9, 2005;  West Salem, WI -  Steve Carlson went airborne in a lap 13 accident in the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, and definately had an impact on the points race, as he landed on points leader Kevin Nuttleman and second-place Andy Burgess. Worse yet for Nuttleman was the fact that Carlson was behind the wheel of Nuttleman’s backup car.

Calm before the storm: The Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model field is staged to go.  The 25 lap main event was full of incidents but fortunately, no one was injured.

The Bud Dash for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model action had its usual thrills.  Mike Belling (43) works the inside groove with Tony Bagstad (27) in tow.  Sophomore driver Sam Andersen (44) tries the high side with Andy Burgess on his tail.

Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman provided close action as well as some thrills.  Here, #99 Rob Mason spins in turn two during heat race action.

The incident began behind race leader Steve Holzhausen, who went on to win the 25-lap feature, as Tim Nelson and Mike Belling battled for second. The two cars touched coming out of turn four, sending Nelson hard into the wall at the beginning of the frontstretch. Carlson was behind the 76 of Nelson, and had no where to go, and rammed the back of the 76, going airborne and sliding along the catch fence, before flipping once. Dan Steele and Sam Andersen were the luckiest drivers on the track, as both cars got through what turned into a 13-car accident as they both drove under the flying 66 of Carlson. When Carlson came down, he landed on Nuttleman and Burgess on the frontstretch, completely blocking the track, and bringing out the red flag.

The stoppage was the fourth and final one of the race, and caused a 28 minute delay as official cleared the track. Andy Niles hit the inside retaining wall hard in a five-car accident on lap eight, Mark Lamoreaux spun on lap 11, and Jim Hagel and Todd Oliver tangled in turn one on lap 11, just before the big one.

Holzhausen cruised to the victory, holding off three challenges by Steele to get underneath him down the stretch. Steel was second, followed by J. Herbst, Andersen and Nick Schroeder. Todd Korish, Lamoreaux, Hagel, Chris Skrede and Oliver rounded out the top ten.

Korish and Lamoreaux were both involved in the lap 13 incident, while Oliver and Hagel were involved in earlier incidents, and still came away with top ten finishes. Nuttleman returned, his car looking more like a modified than a late model, to finish 15th, getting lapped by the top two cars on the final lap.

Steele claimed his first-ever fast time, ending Burgess’s run of seven straight fast qualifying efforts. Stele averaged 97.401 MPH, while Burgess slipped to fourth quickest. Shawn Pfaff won the qualifying heat, while Steve Holzhausen and Todd Korish won the Bud Dashes.

While the late model feature had plenty of yellow and red flags flying, the Sportsman and Thunderstox went green all the way. Branden Berg outdueled Lucas Korish at the Sportsman feature, the cruised to the win, with points leader Dan Gilster taking second. Jes Tenner was third, Korish fourth, and Tom Thill edged Mike Albrecht, Jr. to the line by inches to claim fifth.

Tenner was quick qualifier, averaging 88.335 MPH around the 5/8-mile oval. Matt Inglett won the B-feature, with qualifying heats going to John Olson and Larry Bolster, Jr. Trent Boettcher and Mike Carlson won the Bud Dashes.

Tom Phillips lead from start to finish in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but he had cars right on his rear bumper the entire way. Tony Wheeler made several attempts to get under him, and Josh Inglett nearly got by on the outside twice, but Phillips led them all to take the feature win. Wheeler finished second, with Henry Vian third, Inglett fourth, and Jason Bolster fifth.

Andy Moore won the B-Feature, with Robert Stanfield taking the Bud Dash. Heat winners were Adam Moore, Inglett, Henry Vian and Al Bartels.
