July 16, 2005;  West Salem, WI -  A week ago, Kevin Nuttleman was being lapped by the leaders as the Kwik Trip NASCAR feature ended, after one of the worst wrecks in speedway history ended with his back up car landing on his primary car. Luckily, the damage to the primary car was mostly cosmetic, and he showed it, taking his 95th career win at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway in the Brickl Bros. 50.

After working hard to move from his ninth-place starting position up to fourth, the move to first came rather easily for Nuttleman, an 8-time track champion at La Crosse. Mark Lamoreaux had taken the lead from Shawn Pfaff on lap seven, and maintained that lead until the yellow flew on lap 32. Sam Andersen had tried to duck under Lamoreaux, only to have the door shut on him. As third-place driver Andy Burgess tried to get by Andersen, the two cars touched, sending Burgess hard into the turn three wall, the second-straight week he has been knocked from the feature.

With Andersen moving to the back of the pack, Nuttleman was up to second, but as the safety crew cleared the debris, and removed Burgess’ car from the track, Lamoreaux had a tire go down, and was forced to pit, turning the top spot over to Nuttleman. Dan Steele tried a couple of times to get by for the lead, but never made a serious challenge to Nuttleman, who continues to lead the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series regional points standings.

Steele was second for the second week in a row, followed by Steve Holzhausen, who closed to within 4 points of Burgess for second in points. Todd Oliver finished fourth, followed by Pfaff, and Tony Bagstad. Mike Belling was seventh, while Todd Korish, Chris Skrede and Andersen rounded out the top ten.

Burgess was quick qualifier for the tenth time, and needs just four more quick times to set a new track record for a season. He averaged 98.013 MPH for his run. Andy Niles won the qualifying heat, while Nuttleman and Bagstad won the Bud Dashes.

With the win, his fourth of the season, Nuttleman (680 points) extended his points lead to 74 points over Burgess (606). Holzhausen (602) closed to within four points of Burgess for second, and Lamoreaux (525) and Belling (501) round out the top five in points.

In the Sportsman feature, Trent Boettcher was unable to pull away from the field, but with Aaron Hass and Mike Carlson battling side by side for ten laps, it worked to Boettcher’s advantage, as he led the whole way, surviving a lap 14 caution, and a one-lap sprint to the finish for the win.

Hass chose the outside line on the restart in a bid to take the win, but Boettcher simply had too much for him, and pulled away to the 3-length win. Dan Linnehan managed to work his way underneath Hass for second, while Hass was third, Jes Tenner fourth, and Tom Thill fifth. Tenner picked up ten points on points-leader Dan Gilster with the finish, and is 28 back of the two-time champ Gilster.

History was made in the Bud Dash, where Emily Sue Steck became the first female driver in speedway history to win a sportsman-level dash. She held off Boettcher to win the Odd Bud Dash, while Chad Rosendahl took the Even Dash. Qualifying heats went to Josh Millis and Mark Challet, while Mike Albrecht, Jr. averaged 88.470 MPH in taking the top qualifying spot. Randy Hass claimed the B-main win.

The front of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature stayed tightly bunched all the way, but Rusty Winchel was able to hold on for all 15 laps to take the win over Ben Allen. Corey Barney was third, followed by Mike Krueger, Jr., and Travis Schendel.

Andy Moore took the B-Main, Krueger, Jr. the Bud Dash, and heat wins went to Wayne Smith, Allen, Kyle Voss and Craig Chandler. Andy Moore extended his points lead over Jason Bolster to 12 points, leading Bolster 777-765. Adam Moore inched closer to Bolster in the third spot, four points back.

The Hornets cars will be back in action this Saturday night, with their heat races kicking off at 6:30 p.m., following qualifying at 5 p.m. for the NASCAR Kwik Trip Late Models and Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman. Altra Federal Credit Union presents the action, which will also include the United Auto Supply Thunderstox.
