July
23, 2005; West Salem, WI - Earlier this season,
Andy Burgess was on fire at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, taking three feature wins
in a four-week span. He was cooled off when teammate and 2004 track champion Charlie
Menard returned to the track, and to victory lane. The last four weeks have seen
eight-time track champion Kevin Nuttleman in victory lane three times, and once again, it
was Menard who cooled off the hot shoe, taking the lead on lap seven, and leading the rest
of the way in the Altra Federal Credit Union 25.
Sam Andersen jumped to the early lead over Todd Korish, but Menard was
quickly on the rear bumper of the second-year driver from Melrose. Andersen held him off
for six laps, including a restart after a lap 3 caution brought out by an incident
involving Shawn Pfaff and Nick Schroeder, but Menard finally worked inside of Anderson on
lap six, and took the lead in turn one of the following lap.
Andersen stayed with Menard most of the way, as Burgess and Nuttleman charged through the
field. On lap 19, Burgess, and then Nuttleman moved by J. Herbst to take over third and
fourth, and although they closed on the lead pair, they were never able to make a bid to
take either spot.
Menard took the checkers, with Andersen second, Burgess third, and Nuttleman fourth.
Herbst claimed fifth, with Mark Lamoreaux, Steve Holzhausen, Chris Skrede, Mike Belling
and Troy Goodenough rounding out the top ten.
Burgess was also fast tmer at 97.833 MPH, just ahead of Nuttleman at 97.784 MPH. Andy
Niles claimed the qualifying heat, while Todd Oliver and Shawn Pfaff won the Bud Dashes.
Tom Thill, Dan Gilster and Jes Tenner battled hard behind the leader of the Ray Hutson
Chevrolet Sportsman feature leader, but none of them was able to overtake Tony
Tuxedo Leis as he claimed his first feature win of the season. Thill had his
chances midway through the race, but whether he went high or low, Leis was able to hold
him off.
Gilster made a run on Thill, but went high on the backstretch, and fell back to fourth.
Tenner had his troubles on the last lap, and stumbled to the finish, dragging parts under
his car, as Gilster moved back by him for third, and Linnehan was a bumper short of taking
fourth.
Jes Tenner was quick qualifier for the 7th time this season at 88.450 MPH, and Larry
Bolster Jr. won the B-Main. Qualifying heats went to Nick Clements and Josh Millis, while
Linnehan and Jerimy Wagner won the Bud Dashes.
Jason Schaller pulled to the lead in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, and had a
solid lead when the yellow flew on lap four, as Andy Barney and Ron Heller both spun.
Travis Schendel and Tony Wheeler moved up to challenge Schaller on the restart, but
neither had enough for the 24 car, as Schaller led them all for the win. Schendel was
second, followed by Wheeler, Dan Erdmann and Steve Bornitz.
Andy Moore won the B-Feature and Ben Allen took the checkers in the Bud Dash. Heat winners
were Lonnie Klonecki, Chad Oehler, Jason Chandler and Schaller.
Andrew Moore ducked under Kevin Turner on lap four of the first Features Sports Bar
Hornets feature, then held off Lee Hager by managing to navigate the lapped traffic better
to take the checkered flag. Hager made several attempts at the lead, and pulled ahead once
down the frontstretch, but had to settle for second at the finish. Larry Burrows was
third, followed by Turner and Matt Miller.
After a lap eight caution in the Hornets second feature, it was clear it was a three-car
race for the checkers. It became a one-car battle on lap 12, when Jim Schermerhorn,
running second, drilled leader Nate Towner, sending the Towner car into the wall between
turns three and four. Both cars went to the rear, and Nicki Hagen pulled away on the
restart for the win. Trevor Chilson was second, followed by Justin Mulligen, Joe Losowski
and Wendy Liebsch.
There was excitement from the start in the hornets third feature, as Jeff Heaney spun on
the backstretch, coming to a rest in the middle of the track. As the cars parted, Kim
Strom ducked into the infield, cutting through Lake Speed, the water collected fromt the
mornings rains. A lap later, Jason Mork lost a tire in turn four, with the tire
bouncing off the catch fence and back onto the track, bringing out the caution. Wade
Elliott, Chris Johnson and Rick Schermerhorn battled at the front the rest of the way, the
top three in the race, and in the seasons points standings. Johnson was able to cross the
line first, but failed post-race inspection, handing the victory to Schermerhorn. Elliott
was second, followed by Mike Carlson, John Eron and Jerry Lemke.
Heat winners were Hagen, Turner, Burrows and Elliott.
