Kurth holds off veterans in three-wide finish at La Crosse
By David Morgan

July 30, 2005;  West Salem, WI -  Lorin Kurth outgunned Tim Nelson at the start of the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model feature, and pulled away again after an early caution. Down the stretch, he had a mirror full of hotshoes Andy Burgess, Kevin Nuttleman and Charlie Menard. On the final lap, Nuttleman went high, looking to bypass two cars for the win, and Burgess came charging low out of turn four, the three cars side by side down the frontstretch, but Kurth had just enough to hold off both drivers for his first-ever late model feature win.

Kurth jumped out to a five car-length lead before a lap six caution flew for an incident between Jeff Baker and Jim Hagel in turn one. Mark Lamoreaux moved by Nelson and into second after the restart, and started reigning in the leader, with Burgess, Nuttleman and Menard on his tail. Just after Burgess got by him on the outside on lap 13, Lamoreaux broke loose on the frontstretch, and faded through the field, pitting a lap later.

Burgess then led the charge on the leader, closing the gap over the next seven laps, and pulling up to Kurth’s back bumper with five to go. Twice he looked to the high side, but was unable to make the pass, before the final lap set up the three-wide finish. Nuttleman was the first to make a move on the final lap, going high down the backstretch to pull alongside Burgess entering turn two. He was poised to try to bypass Kurth as well, but as the 2 car slid up the track, Burgess ducked low coming of of turn two, and the three cars roared down the frontstretch, with Kurth just holding off Burgess by a bumper for the win.

Burgess was second, by a half-length over Nuttleman. Menard was third, followed by Steve Holzhausen, Nelson, Shawn Pfaff, Mike Belling, Todd Korish and Sam Anderson.

Burgess claimed his 12th quick time, as he closes in on the track record of 13 set by Nuttleman in 1991. Burgess timed in at 20.132 seconds, an average of 97.531 MPH. Todd Korish won the qualifying heat, while Todd Oliver and Nuttleman won the Bud Dashes.

It was a night for firsts, as Don Hess, a 46 year old Sportsman rookie led most of the way in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman division feature, and held off John Olson in another side-by-side finish.

Olson and Hess battled side by side for the last half of the race, with Olson leading several laps by a bumper. As they came to the white flag, Hess broke loose coming out of turn four, and Olson bolted to the lead. Hess recovered down the frontstretch, and pulled back alongside Olson through turns one and two, setting up the door handle to door handle finish.

They came out of turn four with Olson holding a slight lead, but Hess once more powered down the frontstretch, edging his bumper across the line first. Olson was second, with Dan Linnehan edging Trent Boettcher for third in another side by side battle. Tom Thill rounded out the top five.

It was a rough night for Chad Rosendahl, who leads the sportsman rookie standings, but has a hard-charging Emily Sue Steck gaining ground on him. He advanced to the feature by claiming the B-Main, and worked his way up to 15th in the big race. It was also a rough night for fast timer Jes Tenner, who tipped the gun at 88.124 MPH, but then had problems in both his heat and the feature, and fell to the rear of the field. Larry Bolster, Jr. and Josh Millis took qualifying heat wins, while Steck and Boomer Olson won the Bud Dashes.

Steve Cleveland won his heat race to be up near the front of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, and quickly jumped to the front, pulling away from the field, but the lead evaporated on lap six, as the yellow flew for fluid on the track from the 44 of Danny Fradette. On the restart, Justin Berg stayed right with Cleveland, as they pulled away from third-place Lonnie Klonecki. Berg tried the outside line several times, but could not make the pass, as Cleveland took the win. Berg was second followed by 95 34 2 8 18 80 12 40 76 90

Jamie Dummer claimed the B-Main to advance to the feature, while Adam Moore took the Bud Dash. Heat winners were Lonnie Klonecki, Jason Schaller, Steve Cleveland and Mark Krueger.
