Belling chases down Korish for side-by-side La Crosse win!
By David Morgan and Megan Mullikin

(West Salem, WI - August 20, 2005) -  Todd Korish was one lap from his first feature win since 2001, but he had Mike Belling on his outside as he took the white flag. Belling dropped back a bit, but roared to the lead down the backstretch, then held off Korish by a quarter-length at the finish for his first win in just over a year. Korish had lead most of the first 24 laps, dominating at times before a lap 19 caution, but could not hold on for his second late model win.

The Thunderstox continue to provide close action and excitement for the fans.

Korish started on the outside of the front row, and quickly outgunned Lorin Kurth on the start, but as fast as he jumped to the lead, he had Sam Andersen and Steve Holzhausen charging up in his rear-view mirror. When Holzhausen ducked under Andersen for second on lap 5, the top three cars were six car-lengths in front of the rest of the 24-car field.

Holzhausen continued dogging the leader, taking the lead coming out of turn two on lap eight. Korish battled however, and a lap later, he pulled back into the lead on the backstretch, with Andersen following into second as Holzhausen drifted high on the track.

The 30-year veteran Holzhausen recovered quickly, passing Anderson for the second spot a lap later, just before Chris Skrede brought out the first caution for a spin in turn four.

Korish opened up a four-car advantage on the 78 of Holzhausen, but that was erased four laps later, as two separate incidents brought out the caution. First Todd Oliver spun on the frontstretch, sliding into the inside retaining wall. Seconds later Lorin Kurth spun on the backstretch, collecting Mark Lamoreaux, Nick Schroeder and Adam Degenhardt.

On the restart, Belling was the man on the move, quickly getting around Shawn Pfaff to take third, and then ducking inside to move by Holzhausen on lap 20. he chased down Korish, moving to the outside on lap 23, and crossing the start-finish line for the white flag side by side. Belling fell back through turns one and two, but had the power to pull alongside entering turn three, and edged his way to the win at the checkers.

Korish was second, followed by Holzhausen, Shawn Pfaff and Andy Burgess. Kevin Nuttleman was sixth, followed by Andersen, Tony Bagstad, Bill Niles and John Towner.

Burgess tied Nuttleman’s 14-year old record with his 13th fast qualifying effort of the season, and has two more race nights to take the mark for himself. He timed in at 97.454 MPH on the evening. Jim Hagel won the B-Feature, John Towner won the qualifying heat, and Belling and Bill Niles won the Bud Dashes.

In the Sportsman feature Boomer Olson took the lead at the start. Mike Albrecht Jr. moved to the lead, and took control at the halfway point. He managed to hold off Olson for the remainder of the race. Behind the leaders, there were several changes in position in the final laps, with Branden Berg finishing third, followed by Lucas Korish, and Dan Gilster, the points leader.

Albrecht Jr. also won the Odd Bud Dash, Emily Sue Steck won the Even Bud Dash. In qualifying heats Tom Thill and Larry Bolster Jr. won. Dan Linnehan was fast qualifier at 88.790 MPH. And the B-Feature win went to Chad Rosendahl.

In the Thunderstox feature Steve Grandall took the lead at the beginning, but later spun and was passed by Andy Moore who took the lead. Moore and Grandall battled for several laps. Later in the race there was a four car incident, and following that Al Bartles, Rusty Winchel, and Andy Moore did some bumping and grinding as they passed the finish line. Wayne Smith took the lead with four laps to go, and held everyone off for the win. Moore was second, followed by Henry Vian, Tim Steinhoff and Jason Chandler.

Ron Heller won the B-Feature, Andy Moore took the Bud dash, and heat wins went to Smith, Jason Chandler, Andy Barney and Jeff Strumlin. Steve Miller won the School Bus race, with Mike Albrecht, Jr. alongside Miller’s stop sign at the checkered.
